As negotiations drag on between the union and school board, fall sports seasons could be impacted by strike
With negotiating teams from the Lake Forest High School District 115 School Board and the Lake Forest Education Association teachers’ union meeting with a federal mediator today, what would a strike mean to the football season opening Friday? Should the two sides reach an agreement there will be no worries for the many Lake Forest High School student athletes but if they do not, there could be a work stoppage as early as Sept. 11, three games into the football season. Carmichael, Schmidt hit runway this weekend in Charleston.
Carolina Carmichael and Carly Schmidt aren’t just two of the premier female pole vaulters in the state of Illinois; they are students of the sport. When time allows, the Lake Forest High School standouts can be found watching videos of some of the best vaulters in the world. Carmichael admits she fixates on Steve Hooker, the Olympic gold medalist from Australia (see attached video), and U.S. women’s record holder Jenn Schur. Grumhaus, Bunning, Marsh each secure top 10 individual finishes.
For the first time in three years, Lake Forest High School's boys' swim team is back in the top 10 at this past weekend's State swim meet at Evanston High School. The Scouts shared 10th place with North Suburban Conference co-hort Stevenson with 34 points.In 2009, Lake Forest finished eighth with 53 points, but were shut out in 2010 and 2011. Peter Grumhaus, Bryan Bunning and Andrew Marsh led the charge as each placed in the top 10 in their respective State events. Grumhaus, a junior, placed in both the 200-and 500-yard freestyle swims, earning seventh in the 500 with a time of 4:31.90 and added an eighth place in the 20 in 1:41.80. BLOOMINGTON--The Illinois High School Association and Comcast SportsNet Chicago have announced jointly that the “2011 IHSA Football Playoff Pairing Release Show” will air live from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday (Oct 22) on Comcast SportsNet PLUS (CSN+). The two-hour program will be the first time that the postseason football brackets are revealed, as 256 qualifying teams across eight classes discover their first round opponents. Tarwid finishes in top 16 in State Tennis tournament.
Date: May 28 The Final Score: The Lake Forest High School boys’ tennis team finished 21st in the State Meet. The boys’ track team did not earn team points. Scouts’ Star Performer: In the State Track Meet at Eastern Illinois University, Matt Miller finished 10th in the Discus with a throw of 158 feet, 1 inch. Other Notable Scout Performances: In the State Tennis Tournament at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Peter Tarwid had one of the best freshman performances in recent years by finishing in the top 16. Lake Forest High School's first half goal by junior midfielder Catherine Traut in Friday’s 3-1 loss to Fremd in the title game of the Glenbrook South Sectional is a building moment for a team that graduates 12 seniors from its 24-player roster. Traut will be one of the Scouts' three captains along with juniors Marina Katz and Abby Shipp to form the leadership corps of the 2012 team. They will be joined by standout freshmen like Lucy Edwards and already nationally renowned Ginny McGowan among others. The talents of Traut and McGowan were prominently on display against Fremd. Date: May 27 The Final Score: Fremd 3, Lake Forest 1 Scouts’ Star Performer: Catherine Traut scored the Scouts only goal to tie the game at 1-1 midway through the first half. Other Notable Scout Performances: Ginny McGowan shut down Viking star Elise Kotsakis in the second half after the Fremd senior scored a pair of goals in the opening half. Who’s Next: The Scouts' next outing will be the 2012 season opener. After Regional final loss to Palatine Fremd, Scouts return 4 starters for next season.
A dejected group of Lake Forest High School basketball players took their first steps toward advancing to Sectional play in 2012 Friday night as they walked out of Fremd’s gym after falling to the host Vikings, 44-38, in the Regional final. While the Vikings received their championship trophy and cut the nets from the hoops, the Scouts closed out the season, trudged out of the arena with a 13-16 record and into next season ready to turn dejection into success. “This feeling really sucks,” sophomore guard Carter Bass said. “We don’t want to feel this way again.” Bass is one of four starters returning next year.
