Senate Favors Gambling Expansion

Illinois Senate OKs proposal for new casinos. The bill is now in the House.

State Sen. Terry Link's bill proposing expanded casino gambling in Illinois, including in Lake County, passed the Senate this week with a vote of 32 to 20. The bill, which proposes five new casinos, moved to the House Thursday. Prior to the Senate vote, Link told members the new casinos could generate an initial $1.2 billion for the deficit state, reported the Daily Herald. If approved, possible locations for a casino in Lake County include Park City, North Chicago and Waukegan. Senators representing Lake County who voted in favor of SB1739 were Democrat Terry Link, of Waukegan and Democrat Julie Morrison, of Deerfield. Voting no were Democrat Melinda Bush, of Grayslake and Republican Dan Duffy, of Lake Barrington, according to the vote …

Morrison Takes Senate Seat Wednesday

Deerfield’s Julie Morrison replaces Lake Forest’s Susan Garrett as area’s state senator.

State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) took her seat in the 98th Illinois General Assembly today after being sworn into office fully aware of the seriousness of the job facing her yet honored to be part of the process. “The gravity of the fiscal uncertainty I will be facing is tempering the excitement I feel,” Morrison said Tuesday on her way to Springfield. Morrison Poll Shows 13-Point Lead Over Friedman

State Senate candidate releases information showing her ahead of Republican opponent.

A poll released by the Julie Morrison campaign shows her with a 13-point lead over her Republican opponent, Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, for the State Senate seat being vacated by retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest). In a poll prepared by Anzalone Liszt Research for Morrison, the West Deerfield Township supervisor is preferred by 46 percent of the 400 likely voters while 33 percent like Friedman. The poll was taken between June 20 and 24 and has a margin of error of 4.9 percent. The two candidates hoping to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest, opened their campaign offices a mile apart Saturday and wasted no time differentiating themselves from each other. West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, the Democratic contender, criticized the lack of government experience of Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, the Republican choice. Updated: Garrett Will Not Seek Reelection To State Senate: 'The Time Was Right'

May and Nekritz plan to stay in State House, praise colleague.

Veteran state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) said today she will not seek reelection in the 2012 general election, setting up an open seat race in a district she has represented since it was drawn by the General Assembly 10 years ago.  Garrett will serve the remainder of her term, which expires in January, 2013. She will retire from public life, according to a news release she sent today.  Garrett currently represents all or part of Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Highwood, Highland Park, Deerfield, Glencoe, Northbrook, Glenview and Des Plaines.
