Website's unofficial poll puts freshman Everett Golson as the fans' pick.
Notre Dame's annual Blue-Gold spring game on April 21 may very well predict whether former Lake Forest High School standout Tommy Rees will be a starter or a backup in the fall. According to The Bleacher Report, writer Ian Hanford is picking Gunner Kiel to emerge as the starter. The highly touted freshman, who has never taken a snap as an Irish quafrterback, chose Notre Dame over Indiana and LSU. He is the nephew of former Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel. The Bleacher Report cited Rees' 14 interceptions last year as the need for a change at the quarterback position. In the website's unscientific poll to name the starting quarterback, Everett Golson leads vote-getters with 48.6 percent, followed by Kiel (24.9 percent), Andrew Hendrix (…

THE SKINNY: Notre Dame fans are not the most optimistic of fan bases. Friday's 18-14 Champs Sports Bowl loss to Florida State gave them more fuel for what promises to be a pessimistic offseason. Lake Forest's Tommy Rees ended the game the way he started it: throwing an interception in the Seminole end zone. Rees' numbers on the day do not inspire confidence in South Bend for his junior season in 2012: 16-of-27 for 163 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions. The two picks were very costly as they stopped drives that could have led to points for the Irish. Rees record as a starter now sits at 12-4. GOOD TOMMY: With the Irish leading 7-0 at the half, Notre Dame took the opening kickoff and drove for a touchdown. Rees was the triggerman on…

In September 2007, Tommy Rees started his first high school football game for Lake Forest. It began a three-year run where the boyish, unassuming teenager transformed into a phenom: 5,529 career yards, 50 touchdown passes — both school records. Now, more than four years later, Rees is the triggerman for arguably the most scrutinized position in sports: starting quarterback of the Fighting Irish at Notre Dame. He won his first four games as an 18-year-old freshman in 2010, beating traditional rival USC and leading Notre Dame to a bowl win over Miami (Fla.). Despite being 12-3 as the starter, Rees' deficiencies are a never-ending debate in South Bend and by subway alums. Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Patch reporter Jon Kerr interviewed more than a …

THE SKINNY: In the preseason, Notre Dame had a quarterback controversy. The parties involved were Tommy Rees and Dayne Crist. As we slide into December, replace Crist with Andrew Hendrix. Proving how fragile Rees' hold on the starting quarterback job truly was, the former Scouts star watched from the sidelines in the second half of the Irish's 28-14 loss to Stanford Saturday night. Rees was briefly knocked out of the game during Notre Dame's first play of the game when he was driven to the turf by a Cardinal defender. He returned, but was largely ineffective, replaced in the second half by the more moblie Hendrix, a sophomore from Cincinnati. When asked after the game who would start Notre Dame's bowl game, coach Brian Kelly said "…

THE SKINNY: No style points for Tommy Rees and the Irish Saturday night, but they will take the final result. The Lake Forest High School product led Notre Dame to a 16-14 win over a scrappy Boston College team in South Bend, Ind. Rees' numbers were workmanlike: 24-of-39 passing for 256 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Ten of Rees' competions went to future NFL draft choice Michael Floyd, who had 92 yards receiving. GOOD TOMMY: The sophomore was good in that he once again piloted the Irish to a victory. Notre Dame was plagued by bad field position all night -- six drives started inside its own 15 yard line -- and were unable to generate points. It was a classic manage the game night for Rees. His season stats are an indication…

THE SKINNY: Tommy Rees for Heisman? Let's table that talk until 2012. The Lake Forest HIgh School product sophomore quarterback for Notre Dame torched the Maryland secondary for 30 completions in a 45-21 blow out of the Terrapins in Landover, MD Saturday night. Rees' overall numbers were his best of the season: 30-for-38 passing, 296 yards and two touchdowns. He is now 11-2 at the Irish starter. The game was part of the Irish Shamrock Series, where they play one game each season at a neutral site. (VIDEO) GOOD TOMMY: In abundance last night. Notre Dame (7-3) picked up the tempo on offense, running 84 offensive plays. Rees used a consistent Irish running game -- 212 yards on the ground -- to spread the field through the air, completing …

THE SKINNY: Tommy Rees won his 10th game as a starter (against two losses) as the Irish win their first-ever meeting against Wake Forest, 24-17, Saturday night in Winston-Salem, NC. The sophomore quarterback was 14-of-23 passing for 166 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Game highlights from ESPN. (VIDEO). GOOD TOMMY: They say a quarterback's best friend is a running game. The Irish got that from Jonas Grey, who rushed for 92 yards on 19 carries. But when Rees is most effective, he is getting the ball to Tyler Eifert and Michael Floyd. He hooked up with Eifert for the Irish's first touchdown, a 38-yarder late in the first quarter, then with Floyd, which turned out to be the game-winner early in the second half. (VIDEO). Rees …

You know the old adage that says, "don't judge a book by its cover?" The sage advice would apply to anyone judging Tommy Rees. Consider this — in a college climate featuring games with video game-like passing statistics, the sophomore quarterback for Notre Dame has numbers that do compare favorably to his more famous contemporaries. Through five halves of football (three as the starter, one in relief) here are Rees' season statistics: Those stats don't jump off the page, much like Rees' demeanor and physique. But look at how they stack up to preseason Heisman candidates: Now Luck and Jones have played two fewer quarters than Rees, but have started an equal number of games — Luck and Stanford is 3-0, Jones and the Sooners also are 3-0. It'…

It’s been almost an hour since the final whistle blew, the perfunctory sound in Notre Dame’s convincing 31-13 win over Michigan State on Sept. 17. Inside the school’s massive media room, a dozen reporters crowd around the podium, waiting impatiently -- we have deadlines after all! -- for the Irish starting quarterback to arrive. Emerging through a side door is the star of this reality show, wearing a white dry-fit long sleeve t-shirt and navy blue sweat pants. As he stands behind the podium, the camera lights turn on, microphones raised to below his chin. Like a politician at a fund-raiser, he stares straight ahead, only moving his head in the direction of the first question. It might be just another press conference for whomever is …

Wet and wild. That's how you would describe Saturday in South Bend, as two lightning delays were the cause of a day when Notre Dame football fans were asked to evacuate the stadium twice. It was also a day Lake Forest High School product Tommy Rees will not forget. The former Scouts quarterback, who had lost the starter's job in camp, replaced Dayne Crist in the second half, throwing for 296 yards and two touchdowns. However, Notre Dame lost the game to South Florida, 23-20, crushing BCS expectations for the Irish. Irish coach Brian Kelly has not named Rees the starter for next week's showdown at Michigan, but expect that announcement to come Tuesday. Here's analysis of the bizarre day in South Bend from the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-…
