Time Period Impacts Lake Bluff War Vets' Experiences
Country's reaction to war impacts what memories stick with them.
One of the first things Jack Meierhoff did after returning home from his tour of duty in Vietnam was take off his military uniform. After getting off the airplane at San Francisco International Airport, the Lake Bluff resident headed to the bathroom where he quickly changed into his civilian clothes. "You didn't want to wear your uniform," recalled Meierhoff, who served in the Army infantry in the late 1960s. "There was no esteem in serving your country. You were looked down upon. If there had not been a war in Viet Nam, no one would have enlisted to go there."
