Lake Forest's Charhut wins for second straight year.
If he had his preferences, Chris Charhut would have preferred running in Peoria at this past weekend’s Class 3A State meet. But running in his hometown Sunday was a good consolation prize for the Lake Forest High School senior, who for the second straight year crossed the finish line first at Sunday’s LEAD Red Ribbon 5-kilometer (3.25 mile) Race at Elawa Farm in Lake Forest. “A lot of the team is here, and we all did the same things we would do for a race, stretching and warm-ups,” said Charhut, whose winning time was 16 minutues, 23.71 seconds. “It’s not a replacement for State, but it’s something to do.” Charhut wasn’t really challenged over the 5-kilometer course that winds through the Middlefork Savannah Forest Preserve, looking back …

Speakers featured in "Race to Nowhere" try and impart practical solutions.
Solutions. That’s what a crowd of 300-plus concerned parents packed into Lake Forest's Gorton Community Center auditorium Wednesday sought from nationally acclaimed authors and speakers Dr. Madeline Levine and Dr. Denise Pope. And based on initial feedback, the crowd found some answers. “Fascinating,” said Kate Amaral from Lake Bluff. “This gave me the courage to have a dialogue with administrators.” Diane Terlato from Lake Forest said she gleaned some “very practical advice” from the presentation. “It all comes back to home and family. That’s the most important thing.” The two speakers helped culminate an almost two-month focus in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff begun with packed screenings of the documentary, "Race to Nowhere." which show …

Parents, professional panel start dialogue in wake of watching "Race to Nowhere" film about the pressure on students to succeed.
When Betty Frank-Bailey moved to Lake Forest 10 years ago, she said it was easy to get sucked into the thinking that her teenage daughter needed a tutor for her ACT test. The mother of five daughters ranging in age from 12 to 30, Frank-Bailey said she learned it was not about getting her children into the best schools, but the schools best for them. "If we can start there with what is the best fit," she said. "It's not competitive." Frank-Bailey has a unique perspective both as a mother and as executive director of Speak Up! Prevention Coalition and LEAD (Linking Efforts Against Drugs). LEAD, a Lake Forest-Lake Bluff parent education organization that educates parents and adult mentors on preventing alcohol and drug use, and other …
