Search for New Lake Bluff Principal Starts in October

District 65 names interim principal to serve Lake Bluff Elementary School for 2013-14 term.

An interim principal for Lake Bluff Elementary School for the 2013-14 term has been chosen to enable Lake Bluff School District 65 to make a thorough search for permanent head of the institution, according to an email sent to the families Thursday by Superintendent Jean Sophie. Barbara Ramsey West, a retired administrator and teacher in Glenview and other suburbs, will take the helm this summer to prepare for the coming school year. Since her 2004 retirement, she has held interim administrative assignments in Glenview, Park Ridge and Niles among other places. Lake Bluff Elementary Eco Club to Celebrate Earth Day

The Lake Bluff Elementary School Eco Club will host an Eco Night Open House on Earth Day, Monday, April 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The Lake Bluff Elementary School Eco Club will host an Eco Night Open House on Earth Day, Monday, April 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. A variety of “green” activities are planned, including a Recycle Relay and sustainability talks by student experts on how shoes are re-used, creating a garden, and the difference between recycling and “upcycling.” Eco-friendly crayons and reusable shopping bags will be available for purchase, and donations will be accepted for the planned Outdoor Learning Space. Lake Bluff Principal Retires Immediately

District 65 Board accepts resignation of Shelley Overman from Lake Bluff Elementary School for purpose of retirement at Thursday’s meeting.

Lake Bluff Elementary School Principal Shelley Overman retired effective Thursday and the Lake Bluff District 65 Board of Education accepted her resignation at a meeting Thursday, according to a letter to parents from Superintendent Jean Sophie. Paul McKinney, a former principal in Wheaton-Warrenville School District 200, will become the interim principal Monday, according to Sophie’s letter. He is a retired educator with 21 years of experience. Lake Forest and Lake Bluff Schools Named to State Academic Honor Roll

Five Lake Forest and Lake Bluff area schools were given the honor for sustaining high academic performance for three consecutive years.

Elementary schools in Lake Forest School District 67 and Lake Bluff School District 65 were given high honors by the Illinois State Board of Education this week. The following schools were named to the Academic Honor Roll and given the 2012 Academic Excellence Award. Cherokee Elementary, Deer Path Middle School East, Everett Elementary and Sheridan Elementary in District 67 and Lake Bluff Elementary in District 65 are among 454 Illinois schools receiving the award. The schools honored all sustained high academic performances over the past three years. Bus Ride Home Makes Unexpected Stop

No injuries, but Lake Bluff Elementary School bus driver ticketed.

  A Lake Bluff Elementary School bus with 15 children aboard made an unexpected stop at 3 p.m. April 19 near the intersection of Glen and East Scranton avenues in Lake Bluff. The bus was struck on its rear side by a pickup truck as it was heading north bound on Glen Avenue. The pickup truck was heading west on East Scranton Avenue. No injuries occured to occupants of either vehicle, according to Lake Bluff Police. According to Lake Bluff Police, the bus driver failed to yield the right-of-way to the pickup truck, and was ticketed by police. Lake Bluff Elementary Earns Energy, Environmental Design Certification

Receives Silver LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

  Lake Bluff Elementary School has been granted Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The school, which opened in the Fall 2009, was designed and constructed in accordance with the requirements of Silver LEED certification with an emphasis on environmentally sustainable materials, superior air quality and energy efficiency. Lake Bluff Elementary Raises More Than $1,100, Truckloads of Supplies for Animal Shelter

Fifth grader's idea benefits Orphans of the Storm in Riverwoods.

Students at Lake Bluff Elementary have made a difference this holiday season. Thanks to the fund-raising idea of Ashley Oldenburg, the entire school and community participated in raising funds and donating food, toys and other supplies for Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter in Riverwoods. The money, gift cards and supplies will assist with more than 700 animals at Orphans of the Storm, accoriding to Jackie Borchew, director of the animal shelter. Third grade teacher Amanda Willey's class, which raised the most money, was treated to a pizza party Tuesday at the school. Borchew presented a certificate to honor Oldenburg's efforts, and she brought one of the orphan dogs, Red, as a special guest.

Reading Buddies

Lake Bluff Elementary students partner with third graders from Oak Terrace in Highwood.

  Thirty-three third graders from Oak Terrace Elementary School in Highwood traveled last week to Lake Bluff Elementary School to meet their fourth and fifth grade reading buddies. Third graders from Oak Terrace and Clearview Elementary in Waukegan, along with fourth and fifth graders from Lake Forest Country Day School and Lake Bluff Elementary School, are participating in a reading partnership program Lake County Cares offers called “Sarah’s Dream: Read With Me!”  This program brings students together from neighboring communities in order to share stories and a love of reading while improving literacy in Lake County, as well as creating a culture of compassion and cooperation among children from different schools. Still Time to Contribute to Happy Howl-idays Drive

Monday is the last day to assist Lake Bluff Elementary School's benefit for Orphans of the Storm.

  Lake Forest and Lake Bluff residents can still contribute to Lake Bluff Elementary School's Happy Howl-idays drive to benefit Orphans of the Storm animal shelter. The drive ends today (Dec. 12), but there are still avenues to donate money, toys and food for the animals at the shelter. Drop boxes in the community will be open until Monday evening. Drop Boxes Added to Assist Lake Bluff Elementary School Fund-raiser

Donations help Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter in Riverwoods.

Ashley Oldenburg's quest to make this holiday season a joy for the animals at Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter in Riverwoods is catching on. The Lake Bluff fifth grader created the Happy Howl-idays Drive, which is a school-wide endeavor at Lake Bluff Elementary that groups the kindergarten through fifth-grade classes into seven teams. Each team sponsors an animal from the shelter and raises donations in their pet’s name. The team with the most donations wins a pizza party. The opportunity for the Lake Bluff-Lake Forest communities to participate in the fund-raiser has grown with the addition of four drop boxes.
