Lake Bluff Middle School chose Project Citizen topic to make an impact.
This wasn’t just a matter of choosing a topic for a project. “With this project, we might save lives,” said Sam Jakubowski, an eighth-grader at Lake Bluff Middle School. This month, Lake Bluff Middle School students in Marsha Crall’s eighth-grade social studies class will submit its solution to drug and alcohol use to Project Citizen, a program of the U.S. Department of Education that encourages kids to learn about and influence public policy. Each year, students from Crall’s class develop a solution to a community issue to submit to Project Citizen. The class will attend regional hearings May 24 at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan. Last year, Crall’s class’s “Dangerous Intersection” project placed first in state. “We don’t know if …

Skaronea advances to Lake County Sectional.
There they were again. For students who attended last year's Spelling Bee at Lake Bluff Middle School, the only thing missing at this year's was the huge pink barrette in Kalia Thomas' hair. But this time was meant for Bridgett Skaronea, who correctly spelled the word, vegetarian, after Thomas was unable to correctly spell the word, damageable, to capture last Friday's (Jan. 27) Lake Bluff Middle School Spelling Bee. Last year, Thomas correctly spelled the word, entrepreneur, to win the competition after Skaronea misspelled the word, lackadaisical. This year's competition narrowed down to the two girls by the fifth round from what started out as a field of 10 spellers with two absent. Skaronea wasn't surprised to see her classmate by her…

The reputation of Lake Bluff Middle School's Encore choir can be heard well beyond the borders of Lake Bluff. In the last week, the choir has made a pair of treks to the Auditorium Theatre to perform before and during intermission of the Joffrey Ballet's Nutcracker. The choir made an appearance at a matinee showing Dec. 9 and an evening showing Dec. 15. The invitation came last spring when Laurie Garwood, general manager of the Joffrey Ballet Company, called and extended an invitation to Encore choir director Ann Cvitkovic, who has led the choir for 14 years. Garwood had been at the Shubert Theater earlier this year when the Lake Bluff choir performed at the national tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This isn't the …

Impacted homeowners pleased by measures; hope for best when unit is turned on in May.
Lake Bluff School District 65 will move quickly to land a spot on the agenda of the Lake Bluff Zoning Board after voting unanimously during Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting to approve five recommendations to reduce the noise of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning compressors at Lake Bluff Middle School. One of those recommendations will need the approval of the Zoning Board because it asks to increase the height of the walls around the chiller by 3.5 feet with an acoustic metal material. The Zoning Board meets the third Wednesday of every month, and the next meeting is Jan. 18, 2012. The other four approved recommendations were: The recommendations came as a result of nearly five months of inquiry by District 65, …

Lake Forest High School volleyball star is third player off team to attract college scholarship offer.
Sports and friendship have always been intertwined for Lake Forest High School volleyball star Tori Lanzillotti. From life-long friends like Scout teammates Mary Striedl and Heidi Sierks to the new ones Lanzillotti has already made after verbally committing earlier this week to the University of Akron, sports is about comradery. College volleyball was a certainty for Lanzillotti before the 2011 season began. She had a number of possibilities including schools like Northern Illinois from the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and as far east as Rhode Island. However, a recent trip to Akron sealed the deal. “I liked the team chemistry,” Lanzillotti said. “I could see I was welcome.” Though nearly sold, she decided to return to Lake Bluff and…

Skype hook-up with student's uncle gives classmates chance to ask questions about remote area.
Lake Bluff Middle School students recently visited Antarctica. OK, not really. That would be some kind of field trip. However, technology allows such virtual trips now thanks to Skype, which can beam a person from a remote location via a computer and make it seem like they are sitting right across the table from you. Thanks to Lake Bluff Middle School seventh-grader Kevin Barry, his classmates were treated to hearing from his uncle, Andrew Barry, who is stationed in Antarctica. Andrew Barry, a Navy pilot who still serves in the Reserves, coordinates for the Department of the Interior a small fleet of helicopters and planes used to ship scientific teams conducting experiments for the National Science Foundation out of McMurdo Station. …

A group of Lake Bluff Middle School eighth graders may have found a new sport. Spurred on by Dan Williams, their physical education teacher at Lake Bluff Middle School, the eighth graders tackled the sport of ultimate frisbee and recently came home champions of the Young Chicago Showdown Ultimate Frisbee Tournament in Des Plaines. The students began playing ultimate frisbee in Artesian Park, located across the street from the middle school, after school earlier this fall. Williams, an accomplished Ultimate player, began teaching them the rules and skills of the game. Williams asked the group if they would like to enter the tournament to experience playing teams from throughout the Chicago area. They jumped at the opportunity and spent Oct…
Dr. Paul Shomer presents recommendations that could reduce noise by 50 percent or more.
Lake Bluff School District 65 took a step closer to resolving a noise pollution complaint from a group of Lake Bluff residents, whose houses border the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning compressors behind Lake Bluff Middle School. Interim Superintendent Ben Martindale has initiated scheduling a meeting within the next two weeks involving parties representing the school district, school board, environmental noise experts, and residents from the area impacted. Specifically the meeting will include two District 65 board of education members, Mark Barry and Leigh Ann Charlot, plus Martindale; two members of the Middle School Noise Abatement (MSNA) committee, which represents the residences impacted by the noise; Dr. Paul Schomer, a …
