Junot Diaz to Visit Lake Forest Academy

The Pulitzer Prize winning author will give a reading tonight and will conduct a master class with Lake Forest Academy students on Tuesday.

Junot Diaz, the Pulitzer Prize winning author for the novel "The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," will give a public reading on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Cressey Center for the Arts at Lake Forest Academy. Immediately following the reading, Díaz will conduct a question and answer session as well as a book signing.  "Adolescents always like novels that refuse to patronize adolescents," said Jon Freeman, the former Chair of the English Department, English Instructor and Assistant Dean of Students at Lake Forest Academy. He was describing the appeal of Diaz's novel, "Oscar Wao," which focuses on an overweight, nerdy boy struggling to find his place. "Is Oscar Wao an American archetype?" Freeman said. Update: Parks, Libraries Join Schools Altering Schedule

Some facilities are closed all day while others will shut down early.

(Update at 10:15 a.m.) Programs of the Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Department, the Lake Bluff Park District, the Lake Forest Public Library and the Lake Bluff Public Library have all been altered because of the snow. The Lake Forest Recreation Center, Stirling Hall, the Wildlife Discovery Center, the Deerpath Golf Course office and the fitness center will all close at noon today, according to Marketing Director Cathy Japuntich. The Lake Bluff Public Library is closed today, according to information on its website. The Lake Forest Public Library will close at noon, according to a recording on its telephone. Scouts Beat Lake Forest Academy in Basketball

The Lake Forest Scouts narrowly beat the Caxys 49 to 41 during this annual rivalry match up.

The Lake Forest Scouts narrowly beat the Caxys 49 to 41 during this annual rivalry match up last Friday. Check out the recap below. Final Score: Lake Forest High School 49, Lake Forest Academy 41  Lake Forest HS Scoring: Carter Bass 17, Sam Downey 9 and Ben Simpson 8. Simpson had four steals which led to two breakaway dunks.  Records: LFHS 17-7, LFA 12-9  Game Narrative: The game was close for the first quarter with the Scouts holding an 8-6 lead but broke away in the second half to hold a 21-13 lead at the intermission. A seven-year-old skater in a quest to raise awareness on epilepsy will pay a special visit to Lake Forest Academy Saturday afternoon. Nick Curley, a Chicago resident, has embarked on "100 Miles For Danny", in which he skates ice rinks around the area, raising money for the Danny Did Foundation. Curley skates for five-mile increments in each visit and has reached the 55-mile mark.  "Previously, NHL Hall of Fame Player and Former Blackhawks Coach Denis Savard as well as NHL defenseman Bret Lebda joined Nick for a recent skate, while Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks expressed his support on Twitter," according to a press statement from the Danny Did Foundation. Local Private Schools Prepare for New Year

New personnel and technology in place for 2012-13 school year at School of St. Mary, Lake Forest Academy; bullying prevention programs continued

They are the four words every kid hates to hear:  first day of school. Well, that day that is cursed by kids and perhaps loved by parents is soon upon the people in Lake Forest. There will be some new faces, new buildings and a continuing look at school age issues in the City’s private schools. Both School of St. Mary and Lake Forest Academy are scheduled to open Monday with a few changes on tap for the year for each facility. At School of St. Mary, enrollment is up to 545 students, a spike from 530 last year. “We have an excellent teaching staff,” Dr. Venette Biancalana, the St. Mary’s principal, said. “We provide a Catholic education and many families are opting for a Catholic education today.” With the new students, new staff members …

  Good afternoon Dr. Strudwick, faculty and staff, parents and guardians, and fellow classmates. I stand before you today humbled and extremely proud to be a part of the Lake Forest Academy family. And while it is my responsibility as All-School-President to deliver this speech, I can assure you that I am simply one voice among many capable voices. Top Performances Dot Indoor Track Meet

LFA students trek to Israel, Jordan for spring break.

  Lake Forest Academy's indoor track team competed at the 2012 I.C.O.O.P. S. Track and Field Invitational at Lewis University on March 3. A number of athletes posted personal records in their events including: Jason Santos, Vicente Nagel, Nick Frystack and Meg Kennedy. **** As a part of this year’s Head of School Symposium on Religious Pluralism, a group of students and teachers are traveling to Israel and Jordan over spring break, March 9-23. Other spring break trips include East Asia and Morocco.

Chicago Cubs Youth Baseball Camp Comes to Lake Forest Academy

Two, one-week camps will accept up to 150 campers each.

  This summer, the Chicago Cubs are launching Chicago Cubs Baseball Summer Camps –  the official youth camp of the Cubs, for boys and girls, ages 5 to 13. Prep Hockey Team Captures Gold Medal Classic

Lake Forest seniors among National Merit Scholarship finalists.

  The Lake Forest Academy Prep Hockey team captured the Gold Medal Classic, the Midget AAA Championship game, on Feb. 12 in Madison, Wis. In a stunning overtime 5-4 victory, the Caxys beat highly ranked Shattuck-St. Mary's. To advance to the championship game, LFA also defeated Culver Academy. **** Six members of the senior class were named National Merit Scholarship Finalists. These finalists have met all of the requirements to be considered for National Merit Scholarships offered in 2012.
