Nine Lake Forest College students and one staff member recently spent their spring break near Winona, Minn., helping Habitat for Humanity build a home for community members in need.
Minnesota isn't your typical spring break destination, but for a group of caring Lake Forest College students, it was the best place they could spend their time away from school. On March 10, nine students and one staff member traveled to Minnesota to spend the week working with Habitat for Humanity on a needy family's new home, as well as other projects. In the town of Harmony, Minn., the group primed and painted a four-bedroom ranch home for a single mother and her five children. In Winona, Minn., they painted trim and prepped doors for painting for Habitat homes. "I decided to go on this trip because of the incredible opportunity we have as Lake Forest College students to directly help a family in need," said student Lauren Sanford, who…

The Lake Forest College Theater Department presents its humorous take on Greek tragedy, "All of Orestes," from Feb. 21 through March 2. The production is a three-act look at Orestes and his descent into matricidal madness. It is a modern adaptation of nearly all the Greek tragedies that feature Orestes (Aeschylus’ Oresteia, Sophocles’ Elektra, and Euripides’ Elektra,Orestes, Andromache and Iphigenia in Tauris). Orestes returns to Argos ten years after his mother kills his father to enact murderous revenge with the help of his sister Elektra. Hunted by the Furies, he finally abandons his flight and stands trial under a new system of justice. This is a contemporary work of theater that updates Ancient Greece to a Cold War Soviet look. …

A year and a half after Ron Miller’s death, his spirit keeps touching his students and colleagues. They came together at Bobby’s Deerfield Nov. 2.
Ron Miller founded Common Ground in Deerfield nearly 40 years ago and 18 months after his death he continues to touch people in and around Deerfield. Ten days ago his legacy brought a Deerfield writer, a Chicago vintner and Bobby’s Deerfield together. Common Ground is a center for “inquiry, study and dialogue,” according to its website, started by Miller and Jim Kenney in Deerfield in 1975 to study comparative religion. It has expanded to give offerings to deal with how spiritual, cultural and philosophical ideas impact human experience. One of the people Miller touched is Rosemary Hurwitz of Deerfield. She felt his spirit Nov. 1 when she learned she would be a published author and the next day when she was dining at Bobby’s Deerfield with…

Lake Forest grown organic produce is among the variety of edibles and other products offered at the Lake Forest Farmers’ Market between 8 a.m. and noon each Saturday. It comes from Lake Forest College. On the Lake Forest College campus is a nearly 500 square foot plot of land set aside for a student garden where a variety of produce is grown for the school and greater community. “We sell to students and people who work at the college,” Ryan Vlaar, a junior from Vail CO, said Saturday. “We’re also at the Farmers’ Market every Saturday. It’s all local and organic.” The garden is three years old.
