The Schutts were planning to give their son, Edward, a chance to experience sky diving. Described as adventuresome, this would have been the 18-year-old’s chance to soar. Instead, the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff community attended its third memorial service in less than three months Tuesday afternoon after Edward Schutt was found dead Sunday morning near the railroad tracks in the 700 block of South Sheridan Road and just blocks from his family’s home. The Lake Forest High School senior was struck by a southbound Union Pacific train sometime between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. Sunday after his father, Stephen, president of Lake Forest College, reported him missing to police at 10:30 Saturday night, according to Lake Forest Police and Union Pacific …

Lake Forest's Nina Nissly, Ana Kohout make their mark in sled hockey.
Nina Nissly has taken the challenged out of physically challenged. Born with cerebral palsy, the Lake Forest High School junior is in her fifth year of sled hockey. “I was affected more early on, but as time goes by and medical stuff is updated, now, in my daily life, it’s not much of a challenge,” Nissly said. Sunday, Nissly helped the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association (GLASA) Falcons sled hockey stars dominate a team of Lake Forest College hockey team members, student leaders and teachers, 5-1, at the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Swimming Creates Confidence Nissly, 17, also plays basketball – her GLASA hoops coach Tom Daily recruited her to hockey – and swims the 100-yard freestyle, usually on relay squads, for the LFHS girls’ …

Weekly posting celebrates Lake Forest's 150th anniversary.
I knew I should have used an earlier photo. Just kidding. Thanks for your participation. I didn't realize Richard Widmark's roots included four years at Lake Forest College. He graduated from LFC in 1936, and his first movie role came in 1947 in Kiss of Death. His last role was in 1991 in True Colors. He passed away on March 28, 2004. Thanks for your continued participation and feedback. We'll post another photo next weekend.

No, she's not from Lake Forest. But Diana Nyad did attend Lake Forest College, and graduated Phi Betta Kappa in the early 1970s. You might have heard about her recently. Nyad, 62, tried to swim the 104 miles between Cuba and Florida, but had to give up after 82 miles due to jellyfish stings. According to her website, Nyad swam 102. 5 miles or the longest swim in history from the island of Bimini (Bahamas) to Florida. She also broke numerous world records, including what had been a 50-year mark for circling Manhattan Island, setting the new time of 7 hours, 57 minutes. Reader Chris Kirn did choose Diana's name as one of her guesses. Thanks, Chris! Thanks again for your continued participation and feedback. It is greatly appreciated. If you …

Liz Birnbaum sees garden as link between people, community.
It's not unusual for matriculating college students to donate money to their alma mater. But Lake Forest College alumna Liz Birnbaum took the idea of a senior gift one step further when she offered to create and run a community garden on the Lake Forest College campus. Birnbaum, a humanities major with a passion for environmental studies, hoped to oversee the creation of a college garden before she graduated in the spring of 2008. Time slipped away from her during her senior year, though, and she finished school before she was able to finish setting up a garden. Undeterred, Birnbaum continued to work on the proposal after her graduation, and — when she was offered a job as the program coordinator for the college's environmental studies …

'Peaceful' setting fits well for independent film focused on special needs community.
Before she was in Nightlights, Shawna Waldron appeared in this classic sports film. Do you recognize her? Look for the video on our Facebook page. There may have been Hollywood lights shining on the Lake Forest College campus last week, but Adam Dick felt very much at home. The former Lake Forest College graduate was helping to produce the Indie film Nightlights, which used locations on campus as a backdrop for two days of shooting scenes. “Lake Forest (College) always struck me as a very sanguine, idyllic setting, a place where people can come to feel peaceful and restful,” Dick said. “That kind of setting is the one we want to represent as the kind of facility we want to see statewide and nationwide.” Nightlights tells the story of …

Former Lake Forest resident is launching a new philanthropic organization to aid in the relief of natural and man-made disasters.
Keep the change. That’s what the Michael Greene wants consumers to say to local and national businesses once his WorldPennyJar concept becomes a reality. The Lake Forest High School graduate had always planned on starting his own business. “I’ve always had a strong entrepreneurial spirit - it comes from my father and grandfather - and a desire to build something from the ground up," said Greene, who also graduated from Lake Forest College. "But, more importantly, I have always had a strong desire to help people and protect our planet.” As someone who has paid close attention to the destructive consequences that natural and man-made disasters have on humans and the environment, Greene realized that there was a need for immediate financial …

Lake Forest resident has already made her mark at college, and now brings new ideas to Chicago singers.
When Emilie Amrein began at Lake Forest College four years ago, the school had just one choir of 20 students. Today, the music professor's work has allowed the Lake Forest College music department to expand to nearly four choirs that include approximately 80 students. Her work has not gone unnoticed. Amrein has expanded her musical talents to Chicago, where she has been appointed artistic director for Chicago Choral Artists. Chicago Choral Artists is a choral group that began 35 years ago. According to Amrein, it is rare to see choirs reach this level of longevity. The choir is comprised of 32 singers of all ages from Chicago and its suburbs. “I am looking forward to taking the group out of their comfort zone and building on beautiful …
