There is hard work behind the 550 American flags that appear seven times a year in downtown Lake Forest.
Seven times a year, more than 500 flags appear around Lake Forest, a reminder of the tradition and patriotism that define the community. “Once in a while, someone will pull up next to us and thank us with tears in their eyes,” said Dave Burgess. Thousands showed up for Lake Forest Day's parade Wednesday which began downtown and ended at the carnival at West Park.
Lake Forest Day brought the people out and brought them home. The downtown streets were filled with people watching the parade from residents to former residents who wanted to enjoy the annual event sponsored by the American Legion. This year Viet Nam veterans were honored. Earlier: Lake Forest Day Salutes Viet Nam Vets Lake Forest native Ed Olson lives in Ft. Worth now but he was “home” with friends Jill Bates and Richard Watson. Bates and Watson live in the Chicago area but return to Lake Forest each year for the event. Parade’s theme is a nod to those who weren’t recognized 40 years ago
Members of the Lake Forest American Legion Post 264 were at work preparing for Lake Forest Days Monday – putting up tents, lights and other finishing touches at West Park. Year after year, Post 264 and the Ladies Auxiliary put in months of planning and preparation for the Lake Forest tradition, which celebrated its 100th birthday last year. They do it out of love for the community and don’t ask for recognition. “Some people have no idea – they think, how do those flags get put up every year?” Legion Commander Tom Marks said. “But there are people who want to serve the community and make it a better place.
