Lake Forest High School senior tops closest competitor by a foot.
Everything was working right for Lake Forest High School pole vaulter Carly Schmidt today at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston as she became the Illinois state champion but it was not perfect for an athlete with Olympic aspirations. After a fourth-place medal last year and a State Meet that disappointed her, Schmidt was focused on correcting every mistake and adding perfection in 2013. It paid off with a leap of 13-0, a foot higher than anyone else in the event, and a gold medal. Lake Forest High School’s tennis team dominated the Warren Sectional today in Gurnee picking up more hardware for the Scout’s trophy case finishing the meet with 35 points followed by Warren with 25. In addition to taking the team title, the Scouts advanced two singles players and both doubles teams to the State Meet Thursday through Saturday at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. Soccer team takes Regional crown.
Lake Forest High School Pole vaulter Carly Schmidt and runner Helen Schlachtenhaufen advanced to the championship round of the State Meet with their preliminary round performances today at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Not to be outdone, the Scout soccer team blanked Antioch, 5-0, today to win the Antioch Regional championship and advance to the Lakes Sectional at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Lake Forest is seeded second in the Sectional behind Deerfield. Lake Forest High School District 115 is in the process of searching for a new principal following the April 24 retirement of Jay Hoffmann. The district hopes to have a new leader by June 30 and is asking the community to give their feedback via an on-line survey by Tuesday, May 21. The anonymous survey will help the district identify key attributes the community feels candidates should possess. Survey results will be shared and used by candidate screening and interview teams. Lake Forest resident Dean DeBiase, a former College of Lake County student who gained distinction as a Silicon Valley and Chicago business leader, will be the keynote speaker at the college’s commencement ceremony on Saturday. DeBiase, who transferred from CLC a few credits short of earning a degree, will also receive an honorary associate degree and the Illinois Outstanding Citizen Award. A co-author with Seth Godin of the best-selling business book The Big Moo: Stop Trying to Be Perfect and Start Being Remarkable, DeBiase’s keynote address, "Semper Paratus," will touch on the entrepreneurial movement and content from a new book he is developing. Lake Forest High School pole vaulter Carly Schmidt knows she can make track and field history at the State Meet Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and she is ready. Schmidt placed fourth a year ago as a junior clearing 12-0—teammate Carolina Carmichael won the gold medal with a leap of 12-6—and was disappointed with her performance. Lake Forest High School pole vaulter Carly Schmidt dwarfed the competition at the Palatine Sectional Friday to qualify for the State Meet Thursday through Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Schmidt led two other Scouts—distance runners Helen Schlachtenhaufen and Elle Chode—and the 4x800-meter relay team into the State Finals as the team placed fifth in the Sectional with 42 points. Earlier: Lake Forest Vaulters in Hunt for State Gold This will be Schmidt’s second trip to the State Meet where she finished fourth last year with a vault of 12-0 behind teammate and state champion Carolina Carmichael, who cleared the bar at 12-6.
