Lake Forest High School gymnastics team competes for state title for fourth straight year.
The greatest era in Lake Forest High School gymnastics will come to a close today and Saturday on the grandest stage in Illinois sports, the State Meet in Palatine. As the Scouts make their fourth straight appearance in the State Finals, seniors Kylie Carlson, Kat McKeon and Carly Schmidt will be ending their gymnastics careers under the tutelage of Coach Robin Straus, who will retire after 35 years at the helm. Lake Forest High School gymnastics team noses out three-time defending state champ Carmel to earn another trip to State Finals. Carlson qualifies in all individual events; McKeon makes the cut in three.
Feb. 7 The Final Score: 1. New Trier 144.4, 2. Lake Forest 142.45, 3. Carmel 142.425, 4. Stevenson 141.25, 5. Warren 135.275. Scouts’ Star Performer: Kylie Carlson finished second in the all around competition (37.85). She also took second on the balance beam (9.475), tied for third in the vault (9.55), took fourth in floor exercise (9.4) and tied for fourth on the uneven parallel bars (9.425). Lake Forest High School’s Kylie Carlson and Kat McKeon begin their final gymnastics post season never knowing anything less than earning medals at the State Meet or leading their team to a top finish.
Lifting a storied athletic program to its loftiest position in more than a generation is no easy task but Lake Forest High School gymnasts Kylie Carlson and Kat McKeon have been up for it. Both seniors heading into the last three weeks of their Scout careers, McKeon and Carlson have helped push the Lake Forest gymnastics dynasty to its zenith knowing nothing less than finishing among the state’s elite each year they competed. Earlier: Lake Forest Gymnasts Achieve Near Perfection Undefeated for two years in dual meet competition, the post season begins at 6 p.m. today when Lake Forest hosts the North Suburban Conference Meet where the Scouts are defending champions. Jan. 9 The Final Score: Lake Forest 141, Warren 133.9 Scouts’ Star Performers: Kat McKeon took all around honors (38.1) with Kylie Carlson second (36.65). Both gymnasts scored 9.7 on floor exercise. McKeon also stood out on vault (9.5), uneven parallel bars (9.5) and the balance beam (9.4). Carlson had 9.6 on the vault and 9.15 on the beam.
