For the first time in 10 years, the Lake Forest High School swimming team took home a trophy from the State Meet.
A team and community effort brought Lake Forest High School its first trophy from the State Swim Meet in 10 years Saturday in Winnetka. From a pre meet pep talk from Coach Cindy Dell to chants of “Let’s go relay, Let’s go relay,” from the Scout faithful at the New Trier High School pool Saturday in Winnetka before the final event, everyone was focused on the athletes in the water. Lake Forest High School Swim Coach Cindy Dell took a new tactic this season in hopes of helping the team earn a trophy. She trained the Scouts the same way perennial powers New Trier, Hinsdale Central and St. Charles North approach a season. It worked as the Scouts joined New Trier and Hinsdale in the quest for a trophy. She has been preaching it to the team and she talks about it here. Lake Forest High School swimming team brings home first hardware in 10 years.
A complete team effort propelled the Lake Forest High School swimming to third place in the State Meet today at New Trier High School in Winnetka giving the Scouts their first trophy at the event in 10 years. The Scouts entered the meet with a goal of coming home with hardware and that is what they did by scoring 90 points. They finished 12 ahead of fourth-place Libertyville and three behind runner-up Hinsdale Central. New Trier won its third straight title with 189 points. Earlier: Scouts Swim for State Trophy Saturday “This was a 100 percent team effort,” Coach Cindy Dell said. “Our motto was no guts no glory all year and they gave it their all. Lake Forest High School Swim Team qualifies for medals in two relays and five individual events at State Meet.
Putting itself in a position to earn a trophy at the State Meet for the first time in 10 years, the Lake Forest High School Swim Team put two relays and four individuals competing in five events into the finals at 1 p.m. Saturday in Winnetka after today’s preliminary round. Seniors Peter Grumhaus, Colin Rowe and Bogdan Balteanu along with sophomore Daniel Smith will swim for a championship in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Grumhaus, Rowe and Smith will compete for individual honors along with diver Andrew Marsh. Peter Grumhaus and Colin Rowe are making their fourth consecutive trip to the State Meet today and Saturday for the Lake Forest High School swimming team in Winnetka. This time they after something different. Earlier: Lake Forest Swim Coach Talks State Meet As freshmen, they were part of a team that finished 11th, the next season the Scouts placed 22nd and last year they were 10th. None of that will satisfy the high achieving Scouts this time around. “We want a trophy, second or third,” Grumhaus said. “It’s our last State Meet.” Holding hardware Saturday afternoon will require a top three finish. Swimming Feb. 9 The Final Score: 1. Lake Forest 286, 2. Stevenson, 3. Libertyville 241, 4. Warren 207, 5. Mundelein 135, 6. Zion Benton 77, 7. Vernon Hills 76 Scouts’ Star Performers: Peter Grumhaus, Colin Rowe, Bogdan Balteanu and Daniel Smith teamed to win both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Lake Forest High School swim team drops close meet to Patriots.
Jan. 24 The Final Score: Stevenson 95, Lake Forest 91 Scouts’ Star Performers: The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Colin Rowe, Bogdan Belteanu, Daniel Smith and Peter Grumhaus won the event. The same quartet took the 400 freestyle relay. Belteanu won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Grumhaus was the 100 backstroke winner and placed second in the 200 freestyle. Rowe won the 200 freestyle with a second in the 50 freestyle. Other Notable Scout Performances: Smith swam to second in both the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke while Michael LeMay did the same in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Lake Forest High School captain plays a solid role as the Scout swimmers become one of state’s elite teams.
Leadership comes in many forms and Lake Forest High School swim team captain Peter McCormick is using his personality to guide the Scouts on what is becoming a very successful season. Success is nothing new to the Lake Forest swim program. There have been state championships and one Scout, Matt Grevers, has six Olympics, three of them gold. Jan. 12 The Final Score: Lake Forest compiled 111 points to finish third out of 12 teams at the 57th annual Trevian Relays. The Scouts placed behind defending state champion New Trier (172) and Hinsdale Central (115). Scouts’ Star Performers: The 400-yard freestyle and 200 medley relay teams of Colin Rowe, Bogdan Balteanu, Daniel Smith and Peter Grumhaus both took first place.
