Lake Forest Police Department will help local youth with bike safety.
A Bicycle rodeo teaching bicycle safety sponsored by the Lake Forest Police Department will be held between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Oakwood Parking lot adjacent to City Hall, according to a news release from the Department. The event is free to children of all ages and they can arrive anytime during the four-hour span. They must bring their own bicycle and helmet. Participants will tour a number of stations dealing with important facets of safe cycling, according to the release. Bicycles will be inspected and safety skills taught. Once the rodeo is finished, participants will receive a free raffle ticket for a drawing for a bicycle. A 34-year-old Waukegan man was arrested for striking an officer while he was in the process of being arrested for stealing copper gutters in Lake Forest on April 25. Police went to a home on Knollwood Drive in response to a report of someone possibly stealing copper gutters off of the house on April 25. They found Nicholas E. Kanvik in the yard of the house. He immediately fled on foot from police but was caught after a brief foot chase, according to police. Officers located several lengths of copper gutter in Kanvik’s pickup truck as well as a saw and bolt cutters. Driving under the influence On April 21, officers responded to a one car crash on Ridge Road in which the vehicle left the road striking landscaping, a wall and a gate. Police spoke with Samantha M. Kimber, the 26-year-old driver from Westland, Mich. She exhibited a strong odor of alcohol, admitted to drinking all evening and could not explain how she left the road. Unlawful Possession of Cannabis Police responded to a report of a subject sleeping in the common room of a residence hall at Lake Forest College. They located Adam A. Theft by deception March 29: An officertook a report from a resident who was called by someone claiming to be their grandson, who purported to have been arrested in Maryland for DUI. The caller requested the victim wire bond money to their “Public Defender” using the Money Gram service at Wal‐Mart. The victim complied and later learned their grandson had never been arrested nor requestedmoney. This deception is not unusual in our area and is usually perpetrated using the Money Gram, Western Union or Xoom services. A joint effort of police departments in Deerfield, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Waukegan and Winnteka to enforce a ban against drivers operating hand-held cell phones netted more than 300 citations from April 1-5, reported the Deerfield Police Department. These communities, along with Chicago and Evanston, each have similar local ordinances which restrict the use of a hand-held cell phone while driving a vehicle. Exemptions apply for reporting police, fire or medical emergencies. Police warn that the use of a hand-held cell phone while driving a vehicle greatly compromises public safety and increases the risk of a traffic crash.
