Coaches Give Their Take on Saturday's 6A State Football Matchup

Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Patch chats with the Batavia coach Dennis Piron and Lake Forest's Chuck Spagnoli.

It's been quite a debut for Dennis Prion. The Batavia coach, in his first season, went 9-0 during the regular season, outscoring opponents by an overwheming 326 points.  After a surviving a scare in the first round of the playoffs, the Bulldogs host the Scouts Saturday afternoon in one of the state's better second-round matchups. Prion took a break from preparations to talk to Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Patch earlier this week. So what can we expect from your team in terms of offense and defense? We're balanced with run and pass. We run multiple formations. You could call it a Pro-style. We are pretty aggressive on defense with a 4-3 base.  What do you see on film in Lake Forest? They play in a very good league. They play 7A and 8A teams. They…

Scouts Hit the Road for 2nd Playoff Game; Memory of Last Year's Loss Still Stings

Lake Forest in same position as last season, facing a No. 1 seed on the road. Will they break through this time?

It was June of this year, school had not yet gotten out for summer. Some spring sports were still playing. But the Lake Forest High School football team was already thinking about the fall. Given permission from coach Chuck Spagnoli -- it's "your team" he told the seniors -- the class of 2012 all huddled together in a meeting room at West Campus. In the front of the room was a white board. One by one, they walked to the board and scribbled down what they believed the 2011 season would be about. One word, written by running back Owen Williams, stood out: Finish. The word was a rallying cry all summer for the Scouts, as they sweated through workouts, the monotony of doubles and their retreat to Kenosha. It's a word they forgot to take with …

Lake Forest (8-2) Will Play Batavia (10-0) Next Saturday Afternoon

Schedule mirrors last year's playoff appearance.

Lake Forest High School's football team will play its second round Class 6A State playoff game at 1 p.m. next Saturday (Nov. 5) at Batavia High School against the host Bulldogs. Both teams won their opening games Friday night. The Scouts (8-2) dominated Fenton to the tune of a 55-20 score, while Batavia (10-0) rallied from a 28-7 deficit at home to beat Notre Dame, 35-28. The schedule mirrors Lake Forest's playoff appearance last year when the Scouts throttled Shepard in the opener, 45-25, and then traveled to Crystal Lake South the following Saturday and lost, 28-17. Batavia is one of three No. 1 seeds in the Class 6A State bracket. Last year, Crystal Lake South was also a No. 1 seed and unbeatenat the time of playing Lake Forest. For the…

VIDEO: Post-Game Interviews After Lake Forest's 55-20 Playoff Win Over Fenton

The Scouts win their opening Class 6A State playoff game in decisive fashion, thumping the Bison at Varsity Field.

It takes four wins to make it to the State championship game. Friday night, Lake Forest took care of the first one, crushing Fenton, 55-20, at Varsity Field. We begin our video roundup with quarterback Jordan Beck, who started his first game in three weeks. Beck was sharp for most of the night, giving the Scouts offense a much-needed spark (VIDEO). Next we grabbed running back Owen Williams on the field right after the game. It would be hard for the senior to top last week's 200-plus yard performance against Libertyville, but he came close, rushing for four touchdowns (VIDEO). One of the guys responsible for opening holes for Williams is offensive lineman Brandon Moccia. We chatted with Moccia in the hallway outside the victorious Scouts …

Lake Forest Scores 48 Unanswered Points to Rout Fenton

Scouts dominate rest of the game after giving up early TD.

Date: Oct. 28 The Final Score:  Lake Forest 55, Fenton 20 Scouts’ Star Performer: Jordan Beck is back. Really back. The senior signal caller showed no signs of having missed the last two regular season games due to an injury to his left elbow, hitting 10 of 14 passes for 124 yards, 1 touchdown and no interceptions. He rushed for minus 2 yards, but this was not a game where he had to run. His athleticism is a real key for the Scouts offense, plus his timing with receivers like Luke Bernardi is invaluable. Bernardi had one of his best games of the season, catching seven passes for 122 yards. Other Notable Scout Performances: You can never take for granted Owen Williams, especially after the senior scores four touchdowns, rushes for 116 yards…

The exact time and day wil be announced Monday (Oct. 31). Lake Forest's 55 points represent a season high. Previous high was 49 against Mundelein in the third week of the season. Fourth Quarter 2:21: Fenton adds another meaningless TD. A 5-yard pass from Joe Butz to Dylan Fritz. Bryan Sabala catches the two-point conversion pass from Butz. LF 55, Fenton 20. 6:49: After being forced to start at their own 6 yard line following a botched kick-off return, Scott Powell breaks away on the first play for a 94-yard TD run. Sam Moran makes the kick. LF 55, Fenton 12. 9:02: Fenton …

Fenton's Aerial Attack Highlights 6A State Playoff Matchup; Beck May Play Friday

A week after an emotional conference championship win over Libertyville, the Scouts prepare for their first round playoff game Friday night at home.

In November 2001, one of the most memorable State playoff games in Illinois was played. Joliet Catholic beat Riverside-Brookfield, 56-51, in a Class 5A quarterfinal game. The two teams combined for more than 1,000 yards in total offense. Riverside-Brookfield quarterback Tim Brasic, who went on to start at Illinois, threw for 571 yards and seven touchdowns.  Brasic's offensive coordinator and head coach in that game was Otto Zeman. His unconventional five-receiver sets earned him the nickname "Air Otto". Why is this relevant to Lake Forest High School's football team? Today, Zeman is the offensive coordinator for Fenton High School, the Scouts' opening round opponent in the Class 6A playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at …

VIDEO: 4 Questions with Lake Forest Football Player Baylor Broughton

We ask the Scouts senior, native Southerner about life as a kicker and hunting for wild boar.

It's our first playoff edition of our weekly "4 Questions With..." where we feature a member of the Lake Forest High School football team. This week, we chat with junior Baylor Broughton.  The 6-foot, 175-pound kicker has been a surprise for the Scouts, making 7-of-11 field goals this season. He happens to be from Arkansas with a passion for hunting with an unusual twist.  We caught up with Baylor after Tuesday's practice. (VIDEO) We would like to get your input on what varsity player we should choose for next week's "4 Questions." The Road to Recovery: Lake Forest Quarterback Jordan Beck is Playing the Waiting Game

The senior has missed two games with an elbow injury. Rest and rehab has him ready to return as Lake Forest's starter in time for Friday's Class 6A State playoff opener.

It was 5 p.m. last Friday, two and a half hours before Lake Forest High School was scheduled to play at Libertyville. A win would give the Scouts a share of their first North Suburban Conference Lake Division championship in 16 years._ Sitting in his coach's office at Lake Forest's West Campus, Jordan Beck waited on the news. Would he or wouldn't he play? While his teammates ate their pre-game meal, Lake Forest coach Chuck Spagnoli and offensive coordinator Phil DeWald told Beck that after consulting with his trainer, and his father, Dan, he wouldn't start. "Unless a tsunami came out and washed out the town of Libertyville, I wasn't going in,'" said Beck. With no rain predicted in the area that night, it was obvious to Beck that he would …
