Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers is golden again and he had company, Michael Phelps. Grevers, who won an Olympic gold medal Monday in 100-meter backstroke, doubled his collection Saturday at Aquatics Center of the London Olympics. Earlier: Grevers Claims Olympic Gold, Record Swimming backstroke, Grevers did the opening backstroke leg of the men’s’ 4 x 100 medley relay. The American team, which had never lost this event, did not disappoint, coming home in a time of 3:29.35. The Americans easily outdistanced Japan, who was second in 3:31.26 in the final swimming event of the London Olympic Games. Lake Forest native to team with Phelps to swim Saturday for second gold medal.
Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers didn’t even get wet today, but he will still have a chance at a gold medal. Grevers gave way to Nick Toman in today’s preliminary heat of the men’s 4 x 100 medley relay in London Olympics. Earlier: Grevers Claims Olympic Gold, Record Toman, who was second to Grevers in the 100 meter backstroke on Monday, joined Eric Shanteau, Tyler McGill and Cullen Jones in Friday’s preliminary race. The group swam the fastest time of the two preliminary heats with a 3:32.65 clocking. In tomorrow’s final, those four will be replaced by Grevers, Michael Phelps, Brendan Hansen and Nathan Adrian for the 4 x 100 medley relay final at 2:27 p.m. Saturday Chicago time and 8:27 p.m. in London. Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers is golden. Grevers, who grew up and began his swimming career in Lake Forest, came away with the city’s first individual Olympic gold medal when he won the 100-meter backstroke today at the London Olympics Aquatic Center. And Grevers did it in style as well, setting an Olympic record in the process with a time of 52.16, breaking the old mark of 52.54 seconds. (Update at 4:00 p.m.) Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers earned his first Olympic medal today and he was not even in the pool when the American’s took silver in the 4x100 Freestyle Relay. Grevers was part of the quartet that propelled the Americans into the finals where team of Nathan Adrian, Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Ryan Lochte finished behind France. The French finished the distance in 3:09.93 with the Americans next at 3:10.38. All members of the relay team are awarded a medal whether they compete in the preliminaries or the final. The Lake Forest High School and Northwestern University graduate’s time advances him, and the next seven qualifiers that competed in both semifinals, to Monday’s final at 1:58 p.m. Chicago time or 7:56 p.m. London time. Lake Forest Swim Club member and Winnetka native clocks third fastest time in prelims but does not earn medal.
(Update 2:15 p.m.) Winnetka native and Lake Forest Swim Club member Conor Dwyer fell shy of an Olympic medal today with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle in 3:46.39, .15 seconds slower than his preliminary heat. The race was won by China’s Sui Yang in a world record time of 3:40.18 with South Korea’s Pak Taew-hwan earning the silver medal and Peter Vanderkaay of the United States wining bronze. Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers will be making his second appearance at the Olympics competing in men’s swimming. The Northwestern graduate will be looking to improve on his 2008 silver medal performance in the backstroke. Grevers will begin his competition in the 100m backstroke. His competition will begin with the preliminaries on Sunday at 11 a.m. London time or 5 a.m. here. Should Grevers advance to the semifinals, they will also be Sunday at 10:25 p.m. in London and 4:25 p.m. in Chicago. The top eight times in the semifinals will advance to the finals Monday at 7:56 p.m. in London time or 1:56 p.m. here.
