Update: Morrison Wins Democratic Nomination

Victory belonged to Morrison Tuesday night as the West Deerfield Township Supervisor beat opponent Milton Sumption by nearly 6,500 votes. Morrison will face Highland Park pediatrician and former Naval pilot Arie Friedman in the Nov. 6 general election.

Updated at 9:30 a.m. Milton Sumption declined to be interviewed by Patch, but issued a campaign closing statement on his website late Tuesday night. "I am thankful to have had the opportunity to participate in this 2012 primary election," Sumption wrote. "I congratulate Julie Morrison on winning the primary and wish her well in the general election. Finally, I want to thank all of the volunteers who worked so hard on this campaign, the supporters who shared their resources and wisdom with me, and all of the voters who cast ballots for me in support of positive change for Illinois." Updated at 8:40 p.m.  West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison has officially won the Democratic nomination to succeed retiring 29th District state Sen…

State Senate Hopefuls Campaign, Vote

Morrison, Sumption and Morrison spend time in Highland Park.

Highland Park polling places were a popular spot this morning for all three candidates hoping to replace retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) in the 29th State Senate District. Both West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, one of two Democratic candidates for the seat, and Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, a Republican, spent time at Ravinia School. Friedman, who is unopposed in the Republican primary, voted there and a few hours later Morrison arrived with members of her campaign staff to greet voters. “It’s been great,” Morrison said of her reception by voters at several polling places including Deerspring Pool in Deerfield where she accompanied her daughter, Katherine Morrison, to vote. Morrison cast her …

State Senate Race Gets Contentious

Sumption makes automated phone call attacking Morrison.

The campaign for the Democratic nomination to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) became a little more heated ahead of Tuesday’s primary as one of the candidates questioned the Democratic credentials of the other. Lake Bluff business consultant Milton Sumption sent an automated telephone call into the 29th State Senate District Saturday claiming his opponent, West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, was a Republican until recently. “I was told by voters when I met them this was important,” Sumption said. “Many Democratic voters care about a life-long commitment to Democratic principles. They have concerns about the fact that my opponent was a Republican who switched parties.” Morrison, who is backed by …

Morrison, Sumption Differ on Approach

Democratic State Senate candidates agree on many issues but have different ideas on implementation.

Approach rather than policy differences is what distinguished Democratic Illinois State Senate candidates Julie Morrison and Milton Sumption Sunday at a League of Women Voters sponsored debate at the Highland Park Country Club. The two candidates seeking the Democratic nomination in the March 20 primary to replace retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) agree on a number of issues but would differ on ways to implement those ideas. Sumption, a business consultant from Lake Bluff with a background in the financial industry, brings that expertise to bear when approaching issues like pension reform, job creation, services for homeless veterans and dealing with the state’s growing Medicaid costs. For the last 14 years, Morrison, from …

Morrison Places Emphasis on Job Creation; Sumption Adds in Fiscal Discipline, Education

Candidates answer questions at Sunday forum in Lake Bluff.

The 29th Senate District, which encompasses Deerfield, Highland Park, Glencoe, Glenview, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Niles and Northbrook, has a choice in the March 20 primary between two Democratic candidates: the current Deerfield Township supervisor and a Lake Bluff business consultant with a business, finance and governmental background. Julie Morrison, of Deerfield, has been the West Deerfield Township supervisor for 15 years. She received the endorsement of the person currently holding the office, Susan Garrett, who announced her retirement in July. Sumption joined the race in December, but recently picked up the endorsement of U.S. Senator Tom Daschel. The Lake Bluff resident worked for Daschle as a legislative assistant, and holds …

So when the money is not yours and is supposed to be guaranteed....the only way you can guarantee it is to safely invest it............but spending it is evil....and even more evil is spending it and not replacing it.......and then telling people who depend on it for their retirement that they just wasted 10 years of their life contributing into something that wont be there.....and to start …   more ›

Office Opening Shows Broad Morrison Appeal

People from all walks of political life join forces to support West Deerfield Township supervisor.

West Deerfield Supervisor Julie Morrison is finding help for her campaign to replace retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) from a variety of places. Morrison’s support from established Democratic politicians, first time student interns and even an independent Republican activist were all evident at the opening of her campaign office Saturday in Highland Park. One person who will be volunteering her support to Morrison is Linda Reed of Northbrook. The two first met when Reed was on the local staff of then Rep. John Porter (R-Wilmette) and Morrison was the former Congressman’s field director. “I’ve returned because of Julie (Morrison),” Reed said at the office opening. “I’m an independent and Julie (Morrison) is right on the …

@Gary I didn't necessarily say they would try voluntarily. They would be forced to. As the old saw goes, socialism and progressivism work well until you run out of other people's money. To see what would happen if fiscally responsible legislators intentionally tried to correct the problems we face, look to the North.   more ›

Vernon Democrats Endorse Schneider

Candidates tell Vernon Township group how they will attract independent voters.

Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider won the endorsement of the Vernon Township Democratic Organization Sunday in Vernon Hills among the four contenders for their party’s nomination in the March 20 primary. Schneider, Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman, Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda and Long Grove business owner John Tree made their case to more than 80 people why they were best suited to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the Nov. 6 general election. After listening to each candidate make an opening statement and answer six questions submitted anonymously from the audience on index cards, 33 organization members voted their preference for Schneider, 27 for Sheyman and one each for Bavda and Tree, according to …

I noticed 3 events in the next 10 days, plus 1 event listed two times. That doesn't indicate to me this candidate is working very hard at this point in the race to increase his visibility throughout the district. Too late to make up for lost time now. Does he think he's an incumbent?   more ›

State Senate Hopefuls Meet Voters

Friedman, Morrison go door to door to hear voters’ concerns.

If retail politics is the key to winning the Illinois State Senate seat being vacated by retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest), the three candidates for the position were doing exactly that by meeting voters Saturday and Sunday.  West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, one of two Democrats seeking her party’s nomination in the March 20 primary, and Republican Arie Friedman, a Highland Park pediatrician, were knocking on doors in Northbrook over the weekend.  The other Democrat, Lake Bluff business consultant Milton Sumption, was in Northbrook as well attending a commemoration of the shooting of 19 people in Tucson a year ago that wounded Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ).  Friedman and Morrison got a sense of what is on …

Lake Bluff Resident Joins Race for Garrett Seat

Business consultant Milton Sumption, a Democrat, opposes Deerfield’s Julie Morrison for state Senate.

Lake Bluff business consultant Milton Sumption plans to file petitions Tuesday to become the second Democrat seeking to replace retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest, in the March 20 primary. West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison is the only other Democrat in the race. She began her campaign in August and submitted her paperwork Nov. 28. Garrett has endorsed Morrison. Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman is the only Republican contender so far. Sumption, 48, long has held a belief that public service is important and feels it is time for his return after 17 years in the private sector. He made a brief attempt to win the Democratic nomination for the 10th Congressional District seat in 2010. “I think that my …
