Quarterback will not play Sept. 1 against Navy in Ireland.
Former Lake Forest High School quarterback Tommy Rees will not be playing in the season opener Sept. 1 against Navy in Ireland for disciplinary reasons, according to a report on boston.com. Rees, who was the Fighting Irish starter most of last season, was arrested May 3 for an altercation with South Bend Police after running away from an off campus party. He later pleaded guilty to some of the charges, was given a suspended sentence, agreed to 50 hours of community service and 11 months of probation. The action was taken by Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly who said “players understand it is a privilege” to play for Notre Dame” on boston.com. He said Rees and a teammate, Carlo Calabrese, who was also arrested in the incident, did not meet their…

Former Lake Forest High School quarterback Tommy Rees is spending the summer in South Bend, Ind., working out with his Notre Dame football teammates while attending summer school classes. Rees, who has been charged and pleaded not guilty to four misdemeanors after his May 3 arrest at a house party in South Bend, has been allowed to participate in team workouts by Irish head coach Brian Kelly, who confirmed that to the South Bend Tribune at a golf outing Monday. Rees started 16 of the past 17 games at Notre Dame, and remains in a four-way battle for the starting job with Andrew Hendrix, Everett Golson and Gunner Kiel. The legal ramifications of his arrest return to the forefront July 17 with a status hearing in St. Joseph County court. Rees…

Rees is charged with one count of battery, two counts of resisting law enforcement and one count of illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor. Felony battery charge reduced from house party arrest at Notre Dame.
Former Lake Forest High School product Tommy Rees will face four misdemeanor counts resulting from his arrest at a house party at the University of Notre Dame early Thursday morning, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune. Rees, 19 who will turn 20 later this month, originally faced a felony battery charge for assaulting a Sound Bend (Ind.) police officer, but the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor. Rees used his right knee to strike a police officer in the lower chest area, according to the Tribune report. The remaining charges include resisting law enforcement, minor consumption of alcohol and public intoxication, according to police. Rees posted a $250 bond Thursday afternoon and was released from jail. He will return to court …

For the third year in a row, the former Lake Forest High School star fights for the starting quarterback position. This season, there's more competition nipping at his heels.
Before Tommy Rees was ready to take the stage as a leading man, he needed support from a few old friends. So on a warm March afternoon, Rees and two of his former Lake Forest High School teammates, Connor Cavalaris and Bo Dever, played catch on an indoor field at Lake Forest College. As Cavalaris, now a Notre Dame teammate, and Dever, a Michigan recruit, ran fade routes, short slants and posts, Rees worked on planting his feet and hitting his receivers in stride. Between throws, they joked as old friends do who are familiar with each other’s company. Having taken divergent paths since they were teammates in 2009, football provides the ties that bind. But neither Cavalaris nor Dever can ever relate to the scrutiny Rees has faced in his two …

Former Scout star takes the first snaps, but the question of who will start in the fall remains.
Tommy Rees is back. For how long remains uncertain. The sophomore prepared for his third season at Notre Dame by starting for the Blue team in the team's annual Blue-Gold Spring Football Scrimmage Saturday in South Bend, Ind. Rees' statistics were rather ordinary: 7-for-14 for 84 yards and one bad interception during his second series under center. He played better later in the game -- won by the defense 42-31 -- leading the offense on two scoring drives. With just over four months until Notre Dame's opening game, the conversation all summer will be dominated by who will lead the Irish when they play Navy in Dublin, Ireland in September. Rees' backups - Andrew Hendrix, Everett Golson and Gunner Kiel - all saw playing time Saturday. …

Website's unofficial poll puts freshman Everett Golson as the fans' pick.
Notre Dame's annual Blue-Gold spring game on April 21 may very well predict whether former Lake Forest High School standout Tommy Rees will be a starter or a backup in the fall. According to The Bleacher Report, writer Ian Hanford is picking Gunner Kiel to emerge as the starter. The highly touted freshman, who has never taken a snap as an Irish quafrterback, chose Notre Dame over Indiana and LSU. He is the nephew of former Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel. The Bleacher Report cited Rees' 14 interceptions last year as the need for a change at the quarterback position. In the website's unscientific poll to name the starting quarterback, Everett Golson leads vote-getters with 48.6 percent, followed by Kiel (24.9 percent), Andrew Hendrix (…

THE SKINNY: Notre Dame fans are not the most optimistic of fan bases. Friday's 18-14 Champs Sports Bowl loss to Florida State gave them more fuel for what promises to be a pessimistic offseason. Lake Forest's Tommy Rees ended the game the way he started it: throwing an interception in the Seminole end zone. Rees' numbers on the day do not inspire confidence in South Bend for his junior season in 2012: 16-of-27 for 163 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions. The two picks were very costly as they stopped drives that could have led to points for the Irish. Rees record as a starter now sits at 12-4. GOOD TOMMY: With the Irish leading 7-0 at the half, Notre Dame took the opening kickoff and drove for a touchdown. Rees was the triggerman on…

THE SKINNY: In the preseason, Notre Dame had a quarterback controversy. The parties involved were Tommy Rees and Dayne Crist. As we slide into December, replace Crist with Andrew Hendrix. Proving how fragile Rees' hold on the starting quarterback job truly was, the former Scouts star watched from the sidelines in the second half of the Irish's 28-14 loss to Stanford Saturday night. Rees was briefly knocked out of the game during Notre Dame's first play of the game when he was driven to the turf by a Cardinal defender. He returned, but was largely ineffective, replaced in the second half by the more moblie Hendrix, a sophomore from Cincinnati. When asked after the game who would start Notre Dame's bowl game, coach Brian Kelly said "…

THE SKINNY: No style points for Tommy Rees and the Irish Saturday night, but they will take the final result. The Lake Forest High School product led Notre Dame to a 16-14 win over a scrappy Boston College team in South Bend, Ind. Rees' numbers were workmanlike: 24-of-39 passing for 256 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Ten of Rees' competions went to future NFL draft choice Michael Floyd, who had 92 yards receiving. GOOD TOMMY: The sophomore was good in that he once again piloted the Irish to a victory. Notre Dame was plagued by bad field position all night -- six drives started inside its own 15 yard line -- and were unable to generate points. It was a classic manage the game night for Rees. His season stats are an indication…
