No timetable set on when master plan will come before city.
With the Lake Forest City Council’s passage of the amended special use permit Tuesday night, the real work begins for representatives of Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest and owners of the 23-acre Barat property. Woodlands Academy Board Trustee Ralph Elwart said he and other Woodlands representatives were “thrilled” at the City Council’s action and happy to have plenty to do next. “A lot of people put a lot of time and effort into this,” he said. “We’re grateful to all the people who called and have written to us just to voice their input. Purchaser’s contract requires a Dec. 20 closing, but the Lake Forest City Council cannot act before Jan. 3.
A stack of dates may be about to collide with Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart's desire to be reunited with the 23-acre campus of the former Barat College after a 60-year separation through the generosity of an anonymous donor. Efforts by both Woodlands and the city of Lake Forest are in line to enable the benefactor to acquire the property of the former Barat campus at the northeast corner of Westleigh and Sheridan roads from Harris Bank. The benefactor must tell the bank if it intends to go through with the deal by Dec. 13 and close by Dec. 20, according to Woodlands Trustee Ralph Elwart of Lake Forest. Farewell, Old Main. Impassioned pleas and debate from audience members at Monday night’s Lake Forest City Council meeting on the future of Old Main on the former Barat College property building favored both sides — demolish it, or follow the Historic Preservation Commission’s recommendations to deny a request to remove the Old Main building on Barat Campus from the Historic District. In the end, City Council members voted nearly unanimously to have an ordinance drawn up to remove the 110,000-square-foot Old Main from the Historic District, which is a major step toward allowing the demolition of the 1904 building at 700 Westleigh Road in Lake Forest.
