Woodlands' Real Work Begins With Special Use Permit Approved

No timetable set on when master plan will come before city.

With the Lake Forest City Council’s passage of the amended special use permit Tuesday night, the real work begins for representatives of Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest and owners of the 23-acre Barat property. One of the donor’s requirements is the razing of Old Main. It is beginning to appear the approval of the demolition will not …

Lake Forest Council Vote Paves Way to Demolish Barat's Old Main

Resident: "This building is history, it's a ghost. It's gone."

Impassioned pleas and debate from audience members at Monday night’s Lake Forest City Council meeting on the future of Old Main on the former Barat College property building favored both sides — demolish it, or follow the Historic Preservation Commission’s recommendations to deny a request to remove the Old Main building on Barat Campus from the Historic District. In the end, City Council members voted nearly unanimously to have an ordinance drawn up to remove the 110,000-square-foot Old Main from the Historic District, which is a major step toward allowing the demolition of the 1904 building at 700 Westleigh Road in Lake Forest. Alderman George Pandaleon cast the lone dissenting vote. The action will be dependent on …

Anticipating that Old Main will be removed from the historic district, doesn't the petitioner then need to go before the Building Review Board for the demolition approval?   more ›
