Vatican Names New Pope

Argentina's Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio is the new pope.

At about 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, a swirl of white smoke floated out of a smokestack on top of the Sistine Chapel indicating a new pope had been chosen to head the Catholic church. Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, 76, of Argentina was elected the 266th pope. He has chosen the name of Pope Francis, reported ABC7 News. Bergoglio is the first pope who is from outside of Europe in the modern era, the first South American pope, and the third straight non-Italian pope, reported CLTV. Last month, Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation from the papal office effective Feb. 28, citing his age and health concerns as the primary reason for leaving the position. Pope Benedict XVI to Resign From Papal Office

The Pontiff will be the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years. We want to know what people in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff would like to see in the next pope. What sort of policies and traits do you want him to have?

Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation from the papal office effective Feb. 28, The Vatican Today reports.  The Pontiff made the announcement early this morning, citing his age and health concerns as the primary reason for leaving the position.  “After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” Pope Bendict XVI said. Lake Forest Resident Is Only 3rd Illinoisan To Head B’nai Brith International

Allan Jacobs' sense of community extends to international organization.

Central to Lake Forest resident Allan Jacobs’ lifelong commitment to public service is his desire to give back to the community.  “You have to back give to your community,” Jacobs said. “When residents are involved the community thrives.” In Jacobs’ case, he is a member of a group of communities. As a resident of Lake Forest, he chairs the city's audit committee. Most recently, he was named president of B’nai Brith International, a 167 year-old Jewish social service organization.  Jacobs is one of only three presidents of B’nai Brith ever from Illinois and the first since 1959.
