Sen. Kirk and Sen. Durbin make first joint appearance in state at Great Lakes school along with Rep. Schneider.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield) made their first joint public appearance in Illinois since Kirk returned to full time duty in the Senate in January at a Great Lakes charter school they helped create which is now being hurt by the Sequester. Durbin, Kirk and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) met with students at the Learn Public Charter School, a North Chicago public school on the Great Lakes Naval Base, to see the new institution and listen to the students. “This is our first public appearance in Illinois since Sen. Kirk returned to the Senate (in January after suffering a stroke a year before),” Durbin said. “We wanted it to be here because it is something we worked on together.” Sequester Reduces …

Schneider gets backing from Durbin.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) made a rare public appearance Thursday when Rep. Robert Dold’s (R-Kenilworth) campaign bus stopped outside the senator’s Highland Park home for a visit. Kirk has made few public outings since stroke in January. Dold also picked up Kirk’s endorsement. The video released by the Dold campaign shows the two lawmakers talking but does not disclose the details of their conversation. “Rep. Dold and I have worked on strengthening the security of Israel and to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capabilities,” Kirk said in a release from the Dold campaign. “We worked together to put tougher sanctions on Iran’s energy sector and encouraged the administration to sign the new sanctions into law.” Meanwhile, …

Illinois Senator criticizes North Shore Congressman during visit to Schneider’s office.
Never calling Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) a member of the Tea Party, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield) and Deerfield’s Brad Schneider, Dold’s opponent in the Nov. 6 general election, blamed the freshman Congressman for the Tea Party’s role creating Congressional gridlock. “We can’t get on the road to compromise until the Tea Party element is gone. The road map starts in the 10th District,” Durbin said. “We haven’t had the right person in a long time,” he added telling a room full of volunteers Schneider was the ideal person to put the seat in the Democratic column. At fourth debate in five days, Sheyman’s attacks on Schneider ebb as Tree takes jab at Sheyman.
With four debates in the last five days, the quartet of Democrats seeking their party’s nomination in the March 20 primary to oppose 10th District Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the Nov. 6 general election became more restrained toward each other Sunday. Earlier: Check out Patch's Live Blog of the Debate Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider became increasingly aggressive Wednesday at Stevenson High School and then Saturday at the Deerfield Hyatt responding to attacks by Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman for Schneider’s campaign donations to Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) since 2002. By Sunday, the subject was not raised at a League of Women Voters forum before more than 250 people at the Highland Park Country Club, …

Sheyman, Schneider and Bavda plan to translate their experiences into crafting effective legislation as they seek opportunity to challenge Dold.
Bringing diverse backgrounds to the campaign, the candidates facing off in the March 20 Democratic primary to earn the right to try to challenge Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) all plan to use those experiences to be effective legislators. All three—Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider, 50, Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman, 25, and Mundelein attorney Vivek Bavda, 34—come to the race with a similar idea of how to get legislation passed. “Organizing around issues is what I’ve done my whole career,” Sheyman said. “I’ve been bringing people together on health care and funding for public schools,” he added referring to his efforts for MoveOn.org. Sheyman knows gathering enough support to pass legislation may be no easy …

Before speaking to New Trier Democratic Organization, the U.S. senator tells Patch he would like to make it harder to block legislation.
Frustrated with Senate Republicans blocking a majority of 51 senators from passing President Barack Obama’s American Jobs Act, Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Springfield, said he's willing to change the filibuster rule to require dissenting legislators to speak continually against a bill. Durbin expressed his wish to return to the pre-2005 requirements before keynoting the New Trier Democratic Organization annual dinner Sunday in Northbrook, where more than 250 people gathered to hear his remarks. “If the Republicans are willing interrupt the business of the Senate and bring it to a halt, they should be willing to interrupt their dinner plans,” said Durbin, the Senate majority whip. Unable to pass the bill despite a majority of 51 senators in …

Senator mentored state senator during her first campaign.
If it had not been for the encouragement of Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Springfield, state Sen. Susan Garrett's, D-Lake Forest, political career may never have been. The account of Durbin’s efforts for Garrett was just one of the stories told about the retiring state senator when she received the Ab Mikva Political Courage Award from the Tenth Congressional District Democrats (Tenth Dems) on Sunday at Highland Park Country Club. “He really mentored me,” Garrett said of her first campaign for the Illinois General Assembly in 1998. Durbin was one of more than 250 people at the Tenth Dems annual fall event. In addition to honoring Garrett, the gathering rallied local Democrats as campaign activities began in earnest for the March 20 primary and …
