President Obama made several proposals for increased gun control this week. Among the president's proposals were background checks for all gun sales, even those by private sellers, reinstating and strengtening the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, the New York Times reported. The White House's entire 15-page proposal can be downloaded here. We also attached video of the president discussing the plan to this post. Other aspects of the plan include putting 1,000 more school resource officers and counselors in schools and improving mental health services. A grass roots effort to show support for families dealing with the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. led residents from Grayslake and surrounding areas to "Light the Night" with candles on their front porches Monday, Dec. 17. "I'm a teacher, so I can't even watch the news coverage of the shooting for five minutes without breaking down," said Donna Lovitsch, of Grayslake. "I teach special needs kids at Lake Forest High School so the incident kind of hits home for me." She said she wanted to have the candle lit on her front porch to pay tribute to those affected by the unspeakable tragedy that took the lives of 26 victims, including 20 young children. (Update on Dec. 18 at 5 a.m.) Friday’s murder of 26 people including 20 children by a gunman in Newtown, CT, and more gunplay at a mall outside Portland a few days before prompted Patch to take a new look at the use of an armed guard at C.D. Peacock’s Northbrook Court jewelry store. A year ago, Patch observed the guard and asked readers how they felt. A majority supported the idea. Patch wants to know if recent events have changed minds in the area. Patch is running a new poll and will publish the results next week. RB, excellent point---these gun fans keep bring up totally unrelated facts to try to equal gun deaths---very lame. But even if they had a good point it still doesn't excuse the use of guns as they are in the US today. Why do we even remotely let kids get their hands on guns---maybe cause we have too damn many to begin with??   more ›
