District 67 Board Approves New Teacher Contract

Teachers will see 1.1 to 1.35 percent incremental raises over three years.

One down, one to go. Lake Forest School District 67 Board of Education approved a new three-year teacher contract with the Lake Forest Education Association at its Tuesday night meeting. Next is the Lake Forest High School District 115 teachers, who remain in negotiations. Those negotiations likely will become the property of new Superintendent Michael Simeck, who officially starts July 9. Superintendent Harry Griffith retires June 30. The District 67 board's approval comes after district teachers endorsed the contract June 19. Lake Forest Education Association represents more than 200 teachers and teaching assistants. The base increase on the teachers’ salary schedule is 1.1 percent for the 2012-13 school year, followed by 1.35 percent …

Cherokee Student's Artwork Chosen for City's 4th of July Celebration

  District 67 second through eighth grade students have been participating in a brief School-Wide Behavior Support Survey. The survey is consistent with a positive behavior support model, which forms a portion of the district's Emotional Wellness Initiative, and offers an important glimpse into student perceptions and experiences in the school environment. Parents' perspectives are very important as well, and the district intends to evaluate and refine its efforts for next school year, based upon feedback.   Wanted: Former students, grateful parents, colleagues and community members lucky enough to interact with Dave Knowling, who has taught in Lake Forest School District 67 for more than 30 years and will retire at the end of this school year. Knowling began working for District 67 in 1975 as a special education aide at Deer Path Intermediate. He left in 1978 to attend graduate school. He returned in 1978 as a substitute teacher. In 1979, he began teaching sixth grade. In 1986, he moved to Sheridan to teach fourth grade where he has remained since. New Vaccination Requirement for 2012-13 School Year

Students entering sixth and ninth grades will need to show proof that they received a booster shot against pertussis.

  For the 2012-13 school year, all students entering sixth and ninth grades will be required to show proof that they have received a booster vaccination against pertussis, or whooping cough. The Lake County Health Department said Illinois has seen a resurgence of whooping cough in recent years, with 175 cases in 2011 compared to just 10 cases in 2000. Lake Forest School District 67 reported four cases of whooping cough this school year, Lake Forest High School had one and none were reported by Lake Bluff School District 65, according to school officials. According to the Lake County Health Department, most children are vaccinated against pertussis as infants. That protection wanes over time, however, leaving pre-teens, teenagers and adults…

  The Spirit of 67 Home Tour Committee received 178 entries for its coloring contest. Entries were judged by grade level and all winners received a $5 Sweet's of Lake Forest certificate. Program Preps 4th Grade Parents on Child's Promotion to 5th

  District 67 parents of fourth grade students are invited to "Get a Jump-start on 5th Grade" at a parent meeting set for 9:30-11 a.m. May 8 at the Deer Path Middle School Haskins Center. Sponsored by the APT Parent Awareness Team, a panel of seasoned middle school parents will answer questions about their experiences on the social transition into fifth grade. Spirit of 67 Conducts 10th Annual Home Tour

Fund-raiser opens Lake Forest homes to participants.

  The Spirit of 67 Foundation will celebrate its 10th annual Home Tour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3. This year, there are five Lake Forest Homes to tour, including one “Bonus Home” to commemorate the Tour’s 10th anniversary. Home Tour co-chairs this year are Allison Cekay, Megan Medica and Jamie Wolf. The luncheon will take place at The Lake Forest Club, 554 N. Westmoreland Road, in Lake Forest. Open seating will be provided between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $55 for Spirit members, $65 for non-members. Lunch is an additional $30. Deer Path Middle School Presents "Guys and Dolls"

Public shows set for April 26-27.

  Lake Forest’s Deer Path Middle School has become a den of gamblers, gangsters and dancing girls ready for the big crap game. But don’t worry, the Save-a-Soul Mission will set them on the straight and narrow. Sixty fifth-through-eighth graders have been practicing their singing and dancing for the production of Guys and Dolls since January. The show will open first for fourth graders visiting Deerpath Middle School April 24 and then to the public at 7 p.m. on both April 26-27. Tickets are $7 each and are available at either of Deer Path Middle School’s offices, or at the door.   The eighth grade graduating class at Deer Path Middle School will conduct a Recycle Electronics Drive ofrom 8:30 a.m. to noon April 21. Items can be dropped off at the back of Deer Path Middle School, located at 95 W. Deerpath in Lake Forest (take Hastings Road to the back of the school).
