Local Private Schools Prepare for New Year

New personnel and technology in place for 2012-13 school year at School of St. Mary, Lake Forest Academy; bullying prevention programs continued

They are the four words every kid hates to hear:  first day of school. Well, that day that is cursed by kids and perhaps loved by parents is soon upon the people in Lake Forest. There will be some new faces, new buildings and a continuing look at school age issues in the City’s private schools. Both School of St. Mary and Lake Forest Academy are scheduled to open Monday with a few changes on tap for the year for each facility. At School of St. Mary, enrollment is up to 545 students, a spike from 530 last year. “We have an excellent teaching staff,” Dr. Venette Biancalana, the St. Mary’s principal, said. “We provide a Catholic education and many families are opting for a Catholic education today.” With the new students, new staff members …

One persoanlly trained chess players in the Olympics and another is a player and Bronze medalist in the Olympics. Fifth Graders Gain Greater Understanding of Ancient Egypt

Kindergartners participate in Lent study.

Fifth graders at the School of St. Mary traveled back in time to Ancient Egypt in their visit to Chicago’s Field Museum last month. After learning about Ancient Egypt in their social studies’ class, students took a field trip to see for themselves how the Egyptians lived. They explored the brand new exhibit called Opening the Vaults: Mummies and were able to see over 20 very unique mummies, including one of the oldest mummies on the planet. They witnessed tombs with hieroglyphics carved into the walls, saw artifacts galore, and learned more about how the dead were prepared for their burial. *** During Lent, kindergartners participated in Fruits of the Spirit unit. As each "fruit" was studied, students sang songs, read Bible stories, and …

Students Engineer Projects from Recycled Products

From an automatic dog feeder to a quick shoe dryer.

As part of the science curriculum, Rita Thurston, the eighth grade students at the School of St. Mary recently completed an Engineering Design Project over the course of several weeks. The students were challenged to recycle, reuse, and re-engineer everyday materials into a new invention, working either individually or with a partner. Their task was to follow the engineering design process to create a new invention made from at least two different recycled materials. During the project, students learned the differences between the design process used by engineers and the scientific method used by scientists. Examples of recycled materials students used in their projects included fabric, paper, plastic bottles, beverage cans, wood, …

Eighth Grader in the Right Place This Year to Win St. Mary's Spelling Bee

More than 30 students qualify for school finals.

Ellie Milligan knows she wasn't at last year's Spelling Bee. She was supposed to be, but illness kept her away. The School of St. Mary eighth grader made sure she was there for this year's edition. She correctly spelled the word, convalesce, to win the school's Spelling Bee on Tuesday in Lake Forest. "I was so surprised," Milligan said. She couldn't at first remember the word that gave her the title. After 14 rounds, starting initially with more than 30 classroom finalists, no wonder. "Oh yeah, I knew it," Milligan said when told the word again. The field dwindled to four by the sixth round, including sixth grader Alma Vedra and seventh grader Vanessa Deubler. Both went out in the next round on the words, annotate and linguistically. …
