Grumhaus Conquers Distance Swims With Tireless Effort

Lake Forest hosts Sectional on Saturday; junior has big goals for state meet and beyond.

You might think Lake Forest High School junior Peter Grumhaus has a hard time finding shoes that fit. “He’s one of the top swimmers in the state,” said Lake Forest swim coach Cindy Dell. “His feet are like paddles in the water.” Feet like paddles? How do you ask for that size in a shoe store? Not that Grumhaus spends that much time on land. He has not become one of the state’s top distance freestylers by not dedicating time in the pool. A year ago as a sophomore, Grumhaus earned All-State honors with a ninth-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle. He will make his repeat bid in the 500 freestyle at Saturday’s sectional meet at Lake Forest, and add the 200 freestyle along with a leg in the Scouts’ 200 medley (butterfly) and 400 freestyle …

New Country, New Pool, But Lake Forest Swimmer Already Found His Place

Balteanu adds instant depth to Scout swim team after arrival from Canada.

Bogdan Balteanu has learned the essence of the Lake Forest High School boys’ swim team very fast.  The high school junior arrived in Lake Forest in July from Canada looking for a place to train. He landed at the Lake Forest Swim Club, where Scout coach Cindy Dell mentors the athletes. A few months later, he was chanting her mantra. “I’m building toward Saturday at the state meet,” Balteanu said Tuesday during practice, referring to a Feb. 25 date in Evanston for the state finals. “Every little thing I do in the pool will drop my time for that.” Seeing his times improve through the season is what sets swimming apart from other sports for Balteanu. He flirted briefly with tennis and eschews team sports for competition stressing individual …

Lake Forest's Expectations Fall, Times Rise at State Girls' Swim Meet

Scouts’ 10th-place finish at State Meet was better than last year, but less than hoped for.

A variety of forces came between Lake Forest High School girls’ swim team’s hopes of being one of the State’s top five teams and the reality of its 10th-place finish Saturday at New Trier High School in Winnetka.  Though Rachael Stoehr did her part by winning titles in the 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle to provide 32 of the Scouts’ 39 team points, the other pieces of Lake Forest coach Carolyn Grevers' top five tapestries did not stitch together. Grevers said she was pleased the Scouts finished 10th, one place better than their 2010 performance. However, earlier in the week she professed the opportunity to place among the top five and possibly as high as third. “We’ll take it,” Grevers said of 10th place. "We’ll take the improvement…

Lake Forest High School senior follows in her older brother Mitch's footsteps, who duplicated the feat two years ago.

Lake Forest High School’s Rachel Stoehr swam two championship performances in Saturday’s State Meet at New Trier High School in Winnetka. The senior standout took the title in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.16. She narrowly beat New Trier junior Stephanie Marchuk (1:49.59). Stoehr also took the state crown in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 4:50.14. Once again, she defeated Marchuk (4:52.42). New Trier went on to capture the team title while the Scouts finished 10th. Stoehr was also part of two medal-winning relay teams. Along with Mika Hlavin, Olivia Campbell and Eleanor Weeks, the Scouts finished 11th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.89) and 12th in the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.08). Stoehr's older brother Mitch, now swimming at…

Smartphone Gives Lake Forest Diver Good News About State Meet

Christine Anderson kept updating her phone to learn if she earned a trip to join her teammates.

As Christine Anderson sat having dinner with her Lake Forest High School swim teammates last Saturday night, she clutched her cellphone. “I kept hitting refresh, refresh, refresh, all day long,” Anderson said, describing how she kept checking her smartphone for online results from the other 15 sectional meets that day. “When the last sectional came in I was so excited.” That's because for the first time in five years, Lake Forest will have a diver at state. Anderson's 378.90 point total at Saturday's sectional at Vernon Hills High School — which earned her fifth place — gave her one of 32 at-large tickets to this weekend's state meet at New Trier High School in Winnetka. Only sectional diving champions qualified automatically. Anderson …

Lake Forest Swimmers Count on Campbell's Individual Efforts at Conference Meet

Scouts begin season's big three: Conference, Sectional and State meets.

Olivia Campbell has been a team player for Lake Forest High School's girls’ swimming team throughout her career.  But she may be ready for her close-up, Mr. DeMille. This year, Campbell is favored to win a pair of gold medals as the Scouts head into the North Suburban Conference (NSC) meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at Vernon Hills High School.  “I have always put her where we needed her,” Lake Forest Coach Carolyn Grevers said. “This year she had goals to go to state in the 200 IM (individual medley) and 100 fly (butterfly), but she did not have one of the two best times so she’s swimming the 500 free (freestyle) in Sectionals.”  Campbell, who is seeded first in the league in the 200-yard individual medley, is also eager to produce points for the…
