Lake Forest Community Comes Out To Support Scouts in Football Playoff Loss

Well over 8,000 fans converge on Varsity Field to watch Lake Forest play Cary-Grove in semifinal game Saturday.

Kick off was scheduled for 4 p.m., but Lake Forest was ready for football well before that time Saturday.  The main parking lost east of Varsity Field was completely full by 2:30 p.m, the home stands filled with fans not soon after. One driver pulling into the lot asked a security guard, "is there a football game going on?" His response was dripping with sarcasm, "that's what I hear." With the exception of that driver, there didn't appear to be a single person in Lake Forest not aware the Scouts were playing a football game Saturday. From the "Blue-Out" and "Scout-Out" dress code to "Fear the Spear" written on business windows and signs all over town, Lake Forest's 6A semifinal game against Cary-Grove was clearly a community-wide event. …

Lake Forest's Dream Football Season Comes To An End in 42-21 Loss To Cary-Grove

In front of an electric atmosphere at Varsity Field, Lake Forest jumps out to early lead but in the end couldn't keep up with the Trojans option attack in the IHSA 6A semifinal game.

One hour before the 4 p.m. scheduled kickoff, the bleachers at Varsity Field were filled with Scouts fans, ravenous for the start of Lake Forest's 6A semifinal playoff game against Cary-Grove.  It was worth coming early as the Scouts scored on their first offensive possession, a 32-yard touchdown from senior quarterback Andrew Clifford to junior Geno Quaid.  The crowd was more energized, screaming for Lake Forest to pour it on against favored Cary-Grove. But the Trojans were undefeated and a top seed in 6A for a reason. They are a good football team, outscoring the Scouts 42-14 the rest of the game and ending Lake Forest's charmed postseason run, the final 42-21. "We knew we had to take advantage of drives. We did the best we could, we …

Football Playoff Preview: Q&A With Lake Forest Coach Chuck Spagnoli

On the eve of the Scouts' first semifinal playoff game in 34 years, Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Patch chats with Coach Chuck Spagnoli about the keys to beating Cary-Grove Saturday.

Your opponent, Cary-Grove, is undefeated (12-0) this season. Why are they so good? They are very good and balanced at every positon. There are not too many weaknesses that we can exploit. We have to understand what we are doing on each scheme and execute. Hopefully we can block and tackle.  This is the first option team you have faced all season. How do you stop that type of offense? It creates assignment football for your guys. Not that they don't have assignments (in other games), but they are more defined and they have who they got. They can’t worry about who their guy is versus following the ball. It starts with their fullback (senior Eric Norberg, who has rushed for 1,933 yards and 23 touchdowns this season) and their quarterback (…

Night of Second Chances for Many Lake Forest Football Players As They Advance to Quarterfinals

In a memorable night at Varsity Field in front of a full house, Lake Forest's football team wins its second playoff game for the first time since 1993.

We all believe in second chances. After all, it's an American pastime.  Just ask Jimmy Stewart.  In a game George Bailey himself would have loved to watch, Lake Forest's football team showed life can be wonderful when presented with opportunities to redeem itself. Friday's 23-21 victory over a more-talented Lakes team was proof the Scouts are playing the 2012 season with a unified purpose propelling them into a position rarely reached in the history of the school.  "The thing we talk to them all the time about is all the effort and hard work will pay off, it won’t be over until we determine its over," coach Chuck Spagnoli said. "Our kids have been an extremely resiliant, extremely competitive group." Which starts with the quarterback, …

Lake Forest Out Muscles the Mustangs in Winning First Round Playoff Game Friday Night

If defense wins football championships, the Scouts revealed a blue print on how to beat good teams and high-scoring offenses in the 2012 post-season

If Lake Forest High School makes a long run through the post season in 2012, it may never overcome a challenge as significant as Friday night. On the road in their first round 6A playoff game, the Scouts trailed 21-7 at halftime to a Rolling Meadows team that featured a Division 1 recruit quarterback, Jack Milas (Ball State). He had torched the Scouts secondary for 267 yards passing and three touchdowns. There was no reason to believe Milas wouldn’t continue his aerial assault in the second half. But hidden underneath the gaudy passing numbers, Lake Forest was actually working its defensive game plan.  They were hitting Milas.  “He’s the best quarterback we’ve faced all year. You have to give him a lot of credit,” Lake Forest coach Chuck …

Lake Forest Takes Out Anger on Zion in Lopsided Homecoming Win

The Scouts 41-13 victory was important for their season, but also for their psyche after week-long teacher's strike.

The rock band Aerosmith years ago wrote a song titled, "Don't Get Mad, Get Even." If you watched the Lake Forest Scouts demolish the Zion Zee-Bees 41-13 Friday night, you would say they followed that creed.  But there was plenty of anger. They just took it out on an opponent they could clearly define.  "We had a great game. We are stronger as a team," said senior quarterback Andrew Clifford, who threw for 166 yards on 15-of-21 passing. "We really grew as a team and we showed it tonight." Poor Zion. They didn't know what hit them. Not only did they have to face a Scouts team that is extremely balanced on offense--running backs Hub Cirame and Scott Powell combined for 144 yards rushing with birthday boy Cirame scoring three touchdowns--and …

Lake Forest Trounces Zion in Scouts Homecoming Football Game 41-13

One week after the teacher's strike forced them to forfeit a game against Lake Zurich, the Scouts take their frustration out on the Zee-Bees.

The Final Score: Lake Forest 41, Zion 13. Lake Forest improves to 4-1 on the season. Scout Star Performers: It’s getting repetitive, but Quarterback Andrew Clifford and running back Hub Cirame. Clifford was masterful, throwing for 166 yards and a touchdown on 15-of-21 passing. Cirame was terrific again, rushing for 99 yards on nine carries and three touchdowns.  Other Notable Scout Performances: The defense. For the third time this year, the first team defense pitched a shut out (Buffalo Grove and Highland Park were the other two games). Lake Forest pulled it’s starters after jumping out to a 41-0 halftime lead.  Who’s Next: The Scouts play their last home game Friday against Libertyville at 7:30 p.m.  The Bottom Line: Lake Forest was on…

Post Game Video Interviews: Lake Forest Comes From Behind to Beat Lakes 20-13

The Scouts show resilience in defeating a quality opponent on the road.

This week was the first true test for the Lake Forest Scouts. Give them a passing grade, with honors. Down 7-0 early in the first quarter and again 13-7 in the second half, the Scouts bounced back for tying scores. Then, late in the game, they went ahead for good on an Andrew Clifford touchdown pass to emerging all-conference candidate David Glynn. Earlier: Fourth Quarter Scout Rally Downs Lakes Before the Scouts got on the bus for a celebratory drive back to West Campus from Lake Villa, we talked to running back Hub Cirame. The junior ran 21 times for 103 yards and a touchdown. On the team's game-tying drive in the third quarter, Cirame carried the Scouts on his back, wearing down a tiring Lakes defense for 44 yards on five carries. We …

Post Game Interviews: Lake Forest Slams Buffalo Grove 28-7 In Opener (VIDEO)

We go inside the Scouts locker room after their 23-0 win over the Giants at Wolters Field.

It could have been better, but it's hard to argue with the results. Lake Forest is 2-0 after defeating Highland Park 23-0 Friday night. For the second week in a row, the Scouts got off to a slow start. But once the road jitters subsided, they dominated Highland Park in all phases of the game. Patch first talked to running back Scott Powell. Powell, a senior, said he and Hub Cirame are making a formidable duo in the backfield. Cirame scored the Scouts second touchdown on the night, a 20-yard scamper in the third quarter, as well as a touchdown called back by a penalty. Earlier: Lake Forest Stomps Highland Park 23-0 in Football Game at Wolters Field Friday Night We also spoke with linebacker Trent Williams. Williams, a junior, had an …

Lake Forest Stomps Highland Park 23-0 in Football Game at Wolters Field Friday Night

For the second year in a row, the Scouts dominate the Giants.

The Final Score:  Lake Forest 23, Highland Park 0 Scout’ Star Performers: Wide Receiver David Glynn may just have emerged as Andrew Clifford’s favorite target. The 6-foot-2 junior receiver caught six passes for 123 yards, including an impressive 40-yard touchdown in the second quarter that made it 6-0 Scouts. . Giant Star Performers: Running Back Andrew Sledd accounted for almost all of Highland Park’s offense. The senior running back rushed for 105 yards on 14 carries for the Giants. Other Notable Scout Performances: The defense. In both games the past two seasons against the Giants, the Scouts have allowed just eight points. That's pretty good. Other Notable Giant Performances: Highland Park's defense kept the Scouts out of the end …
