Lake Forest Girls Tennis Team Fuses Talent and Chemistry

Summer workouts at Lake Forest Beach catalyst for terrific start to 2012 season.

It was the perfect day to go to the beach. Well over 80 degrees, plenty of sun and warm water temperatures. But that August day was anything but a day at the beach for the Lake Forest High School girls’ tennis team. After watching the sunrise at 5:30 a.m., 15 athletes ran stairs, sprinted through the sand and crouched under ramps at Lake Forest Beach. By the time the sun was shining, they had put themselves through a killer workout. As painful as it may have been at the time, the residual impact of the experience is now revealing itself as the Scouts are off their best start since the 2010 state championship team. “It just set the tone because we all wanted to do it. Girls’ golfers topple Grant.

Sept. 6  Tennis  The Final Score:  Lake Forest 8, Mundelein 0  Scouts’ Star Performers:      Elizabeth Zordani, Catherine Orfanos, Caroline Asmussen and Margaux Miller took singles victories. Other Notable Scout Performances:           Doubles winners were the tandem of Victoria Falk and Christina Zordani, the team of Colleen Morris and Brynn Carlson, the duo of Emily Kuchman and Lucy Lincoln a well as the pair of Olivia Murphy and Zoe Park. Top Scout Performers: Sophomore Peter Tarwid placed sixth in singles, falling in the fifth-place match to Hinsdale Central's Sam Bloom, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Tarwid won his first three matches before losing to Hinsdale Central's Martin Joyce in the championship bracket quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-4. But he bounced back in the consolation bracket to win his next two matches to advance to the fifth-place match. Lake Forest Focuses on Every Single Point at State

Young tennis squad could lay a big foundation.

When it comes to this weekend’s boys state tennis tournament, Lake Forest High School has no visions of grandeur. After all, half the Scouts’ state qualifiers have yet to complete their sophomore year. But that doesn’t mean the Scouts don’t have high hopes when they take the courts Thursday, May 24, at various sites around the northwest suburbs. When action concludes Saturday at Hersey High School, they hope to have scrambled for enough points to let the usual suspects like Hinsdale Central, New Trier, Oak Park-River Forest and Stevenson know they will be a force to be reckoned with next year. “If we all do well, I think we can finish in the top five,” said the Scouts’ No. 1 player, Peter Tarwid, a sophomore.
