Annual Spirit of 67 Home Tour will raise money to enrich student experience at Lake Forest schools.
Lake Forest residents will have their annual opportunity to tour four historically and architecturally significant homes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and help the students of Lake Forest School District 67 schools at the same time. Which homes have been selected by the Spirit of 67 Foundation, the host of the event? That is a surprise. People will learn the four residences when they pick up their ticket Thursday. Wanted: Former students, grateful parents, colleagues and community members lucky enough to interact with Dave Knowling, who has taught in Lake Forest School District 67 for more than 30 years and will retire at the end of this school year. Knowling began working for District 67 in 1975 as a special education aide at Deer Path Intermediate. He left in 1978 to attend graduate school. He returned in 1978 as a substitute teacher. In 1979, he began teaching sixth grade. In 1986, he moved to Sheridan to teach fourth grade where he has remained since. Tree root cracks sewer pipe leading into front of school.
Sheridan School students will return to classes on Thursday after spending an unexpected day at home on Wednesday when School District 67 officials decided to close the Lake Forest elementary school building due to a cracked sewer line. According to Carol White, director of buildings and grounds for District 67, plumbing crews are working on the pipe and should have their work completed by 9 tonight (March 7). "We could open the school right now," White said at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon. In an email to parents, school officials said "there was no damage to the building and all of the repair work has taken place outside. There are no concerns about health issues." Sheridan School students will not attend classes Wednesday after a collapsed sewer line caused School District 67 officials to close the school for the day, according to Anne Whipple, director of communications for the Lake Forest school district. School testing dates set.
Cherokee students will participate in the school's Inquiring Minds presentations on Feb. 23, in the Cherokee Multipurpose Room. For their presentations, students can work alone, with a partner, or in a group for a fun-filled learning experience of their own interest and choosing. Last year, more than 100 Cherokee students shared their collections, hobbies, interests and experiments with the Cherokee community. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with set up from 6-6:30 p.m. Presentations are from 6:30-8 p.m. **** The Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) will be given March 5-16 to students in grades 3-8. Associate principal will assist at both schools as well.
Michelle Shinn has been appointed principal of both Cherokee Elementary and Sheridan School in Lake Forest School District 67. Robert Bolin will assist Shinn as an associate principal at both schools. Bolin has served as the assistant principal at Daniel Wright Junior High School in Lincolnshire for the past three years. His educational background includes experience at the elementary level as an administrator and school psychologist.

Jack Sands, a second grade student at Sheridan Elementary School, has already begun building his art portfolio and resume. As the winner of the Lake Forest 4th of July Art Contest, he will receive a $75 gift certificate to Market Square, be introduced to the community at the 4th of July celebration at Deer Path Park, and his art will grace the posters and T-shirts that will be displayed throughout the community. His work was chosen over dozens of entries submitted by older, more experienced student artists. Look for more of this young, aspiring artist in the future. Q. Jessica Volpe, a first grade teacher at Sheridan School, received a certificate of achievement for her work with HUGS (Help Us Give Supper). Her class created a video about the school's food drive for HUGS, and she shares it with each class to promote the drive. Present at the ceremony were Rachel Hetler of Lake County Cares; Kristin Hughes, founder of HUGS food drive; Kate Bryant, Sheridan School Community Service Rep, and Missy Burger, Executive APT Community Service. The award was presented by Lake County Cares and the Executive APT. Lake County Cares distributes the food collected from drives like at Sheridan School to seven food pantries in the northern suburbs.
