Focus on studying pays off; Banta advances to Lake County Finals.
The best advice Alex Banta received about Wednesday night's Lake County Sectional Spelling Bee actually came from his music teacher at Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest. "I have a music teacher (Jean Hersey) who went to nationals (the National Spelling Bee), and she told me, 'You gotta study', so it's become an obsession for me," Banta said. "So, I was like, 'Alright, I'll study'. And it paid off. A lot." Banta, a seventh grader, was the last of four participants to advance from the Sectional after he spelled the word, qwerty, correctly. More than 30 students qualify for school finals.
Ellie Milligan knows she wasn't at last year's Spelling Bee. She was supposed to be, but illness kept her away. The School of St. Mary eighth grader made sure she was there for this year's edition. She correctly spelled the word, convalesce, to win the school's Spelling Bee on Tuesday in Lake Forest. "I was so surprised," Milligan said. She couldn't at first remember the word that gave her the title. After 14 rounds, starting initially with more than 30 classroom finalists, no wonder. "Oh yeah, I knew it," Milligan said when told the word again. The field dwindled to four by the sixth round, including sixth grader Alma Vedra and seventh grader Vanessa Deubler. Skaronea advances to Lake County Sectional.
There they were again. For students who attended last year's Spelling Bee at Lake Bluff Middle School, the only thing missing at this year's was the huge pink barrette in Kalia Thomas' hair. But this time was meant for Bridgett Skaronea, who correctly spelled the word, vegetarian, after Thomas was unable to correctly spell the word, damageable, to capture last Friday's (Jan. 27) Lake Bluff Middle School Spelling Bee. Last year, Thomas correctly spelled the word, entrepreneur, to win the competition after Skaronea misspelled the word, lackadaisical. Seventh grader advances to Lake County Sectionals on Feb. 22.
Alex Banta likes to read. A lot. The Deer Path Middle School student can also trace the exact timeframe when reading became a passion rather than a scholastic requirement. “It was spring break and I didn’t bring any technology,” said Banta, who was on a family vacation in Mexico. “It started with a John Grisham novel that somebody left in the hotel room.” By the end of his vacation Banta had read 10 books, which makes it all the sweeter that his prize for winning the school's Spelling Bee last Friday (Jan. 27) is a gift certificate for Lake Forest Book Store. East Lake Academy's Karina Kavanaugh survives until 4th round.
The fourth round of Wednesday night's Spelling Bee Sectional proved to be a difference maker. Going into the round, 16 out of the original field of 44 spellers were still alive at South Park School in Deerfield. After the fourth round, six were left. East Lake Academy's Karina Kavanaugh was still alive in that fourth round, but then ran into the word, perestroika, and just missed spelling it correctly. Roundout School's Nora Tucker lasted until the third round, missing on the word, soliloquy. For the rest of the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff entrants, Lake Bluff Middle School's Kalia Thomas advanced to the second round before being eliminated on the word, wanton. Outlasts field of 30; advances to Sectional.
The third time really was a charm for Samantha Miller. The eighth grader came to the brink of elimination twice in the School of St. Mary’s spelling bee on Feb. 1. However, when sixth grader M.J. Finnegan missed in spelling the word, lackadaisical, after Miller had correctly spelled, anthropology, she ended the dramatics with the word, orthographize. The winner has to spell a second word correctly in order to be named the champion. Kalia Thomas should have known how to spell the word. "We're studying entrepreneurs in Social Studies, so we had to know how to spell that one," said Thomas, who correctly spelled the word, entrepreneur, to win the Lake Bluff Middle School Spelling Bee Thursday morning at the school. Thomas, a seventh grader, had to spell the word correctly, or fall back into a competition with runner-up Bridgett Skaronea, also a seventh grader, who had missed on the word, lackadaisical. Alex Brown, a sixth grader at Deer Path Middle School, will participate in the Lake County Sectional Spelling Bee next month after emerging as the winner of the school's Spelling Bee this past week. Brown was one of four finalists to emerge from a field of 55 spellers in fifth through seventh grades. The other three were Leah Kuperman (sixth grade), Aiden Kinsella (fifth grade) and Erika Herrmann (sixth grade). Kuperman finished runner-up to Brown. Both girls received gift cards to Lake Forest Book Store, courtesy of the Association of Parents and Teachers.
