The 25-year-old bakery on Dundee Road offers an assortment of desserts for practically any holiday.
I walked into Leonard's Bakery at 2776 Dundee Rd. in Northbrook and immediately witnessed a man telling the owner his "chocolate donuts are the best." He was an older man, probably one who's had a lot of donuts in his time. Perhaps the man was just being polite, but it didn't seem that way. Just like the Christmas Holiday Elf on the Shelf tradition, you can be really creative with the idea that leprechauns play tricks on kids. After all, they are tiny, green, greedy, and grumpy. Back when my daughter was in day care, her very clever teacher decided to have the kids decorate the room for St. Patrick’s Day. When they came back the next morning, the “Leprechaun” had played a trick on them and shrunken …

Anyone looking to sweeten up a St. Patrick’s Day celebration needs look no further than Gerhard’s in Lake Forest. Irish soda bread is available every day through St. Patrick’s Day starting today. The bakery advertises it as a “moist and fluffy buttermilk bread with raisins and a sprinkling of rock sugar.” Anyone worried about Gerhard’s running out can place an order for soda bread or other treats. Looking for something sweeter? You can buy or order Bailey’s Irish Cream mouse, a chocolate and lime cake or shamrock cookies.
