Twenty-two area high school students watch UL test fire safety by burning houses as they view application of STEM education.
STEM education has been a passion of Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) since he was elected to Congress. Monday, he took 22 area high school students on a field trip to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in Northbrook and three other sites to prove his point. Dold often touts the importance of educating young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to ease their way into the modern job market. At UL, the subject came alive in front of the students. “It was great seeing it in action,” Glenbrook South student Rohan Shah said. “We learn about this in school, but it was cool to see it was really applicable.” What the students saw at the UL facility was how the scientists and engineers test furniture to determine how …

Lake Forest girls' hockey survives coaching change to reach state semifinals.
An aspiring author, if Marie Soukup were to put pen to this Lake Forest High School girls' hockey season, she would probably compare it to the biggest rollercoaster ride at nearby Great America. “This seems to be our most exciting year, but maybe I’m just saying that because it’s my senior season,’’ said Lake Bluff’s Soukup, one of five seniors leading the Scouts in their quest to defend the Blackhawk Cup championship from last year. The other seniors include Jessie Gould (Long Grove) and Kelsey Patten (Mundelein), who attend Stevenson High School, along with Haley Conroy and Dana Markee of Lake Forest, who attend LFHS along with Soukup. The Scouts have certainly experienced the thrill of ups and downs during the course of this campaign…

Final Score: Lake Forest 10, Stevenson 7 Fourth Quarter Lake Forest is able to run out the clock. It's being reported that the last time Lake Forest beat Stevenson was 1995. At the very least, it's the first time Lake Forest has beaten the Patriots since Chuck Spagnoli became coach nine years ago. Update: It was 1997. Lake Forest beat the Patriots, 26-19. 1:39: On third down and 10, quarterback Jordan Beck sprinted to his left and looked to turn the corner, but he was confronted by the Patriots defense, and the two sides collided. Stevenson tried to strip the ball from Beck, but he wouldn't surrender it. The ensuing frenzy on the Lake Forest sideline caused the officials to flag Stevenson for a personal foul, giving Lake Forest a much-…

Tenth Congressional District students participate in model congress.
Cole Sunderland has seen the political process in action. Last weekend, the Lake Forest High School junior had an opportunity to participate in it. Sunderland was one of more than 120 high school students from the area gathered for a model congress sponsored by Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) Saturday at Stevenson High School. Sunderland interned for Dold’s 2010 campaign, but what he and the other students may have found out is now that the congressman is in office, his job is a lot harder. “The process is a lot more complicated than I thought it would be,” Glenbrook South senior Edwin Belogorlov said. “There is so much more in real life.” The students were given a piece of legislation to develop that involved work in three committees — …

Highest team score ever just misses catching Stevenson by 1.1 points.
While Lake Forest High School's goal of taking the North Suburban Conference crown became more challenging after a narrow 147.85-146.75 dual meet loss to Stevenson Wednesday, the Scouts chances to achieve a top five finish at the State meet received a boost. "Half the league championship is determined by dual meet performance and 50 percent is from the conference meet. We'll have to beat them at the conference meet to get a share of the title" said Scouts coach Robin Straus. This assumes neither the Scouts nor the Patriots stumble in dual meet competition along the way. On its way to totaling 146.75 points against Stevenson, Lake Forest recorded the "best score in the history of the program," Straus said, erasing the record of 145.54 set …

STEM reminds me of stem cell research, an issue Congressman Dold would likely never endorse with a vote on the floor of the House, but he does exploit kids for a story. Here we sit in Lake County, part of the IL-10 district, and this lightweight (disguised as a moderate) Congressman chooses to take a few kids to a place where they blow things up. UL does great work to promote safety and save …   more ›
