UPDATE: Teen Struck by Train Identified as son of Lake Forest College President

Edward Schutt, 18, was hit by train in early morning hours on Sunday.

5:07 p.m. Sunday, March 25 In an email sent out to the Lake Forest College community by Dean Flot, dean of students at Lake Forest College, confirmed the president's son was the victim struck by a train and killed early Sunday morning. "Obviously this is a very sad and upsetting situation, and we understand that some support might be helpful. I encourage you to reach out to each other, family, friends, or anyone you feel comfortable speaking with," Flot wrote. Flot advised LFC students that counselors are available during the week, and after hours at (847) 735-5555. We cannot imagine why someone would want to commit suicide because we are fortunate not to suffer from a mental illness. I am not a professional but I do have a teenage family member who suffers from this terrible disease. I believe that the biggest issue limiting our ability to slow the suicide rate is that we do not recognize quickly enough (or at all) the signs and symptoms of mental illness. …   more ›

East Lake Forest Train Station Repairs Likely To Begin This Summer

Roof replacement will be the first phase of the project.

Every day, First Ward Alderman Kent Novit catches the Metra train from the East Lake Forest Train Station, and he has become alarmed by the state of repair that the building has fallen into in recent years. “The appearance of the station is horrible,” he said at Monday night's City Council meeting. “This is what is the center of our city.” Although it may not happen as soon as Novit would like, the city of Lake Forest took a step closer Monday night to Phase I of the rehabilitation of the East Lake Forest Train Station. City Council members approved the authorization to execute an agreement with Metra to begin the project. Route 176 Railroad Crossing will be Closed Nov. 22-24

Will reopen Nov. 24 in time for Thanksgiving Day travel.

Happy Thanksgiving. Early. Illinois Route 176 should be reopen for Thanksgiving Day travel after Union Pacific Railroad performs repairs on the railroad crossing starting at 3 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22. The cross will reopen by 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24. The bike path will also be closed during those two days. Union Pacific Railroad has recently informed the Village of Lake Bluff that it will replace the railroad crossing at Route 176 (west of Green Bay Road and east of US 41). The Village will provide additional information as it becomes available.
