Former Scout star takes the first snaps, but the question of who will start in the fall remains.
Tommy Rees is back. For how long remains uncertain. The sophomore prepared for his third season at Notre Dame by starting for the Blue team in the team's annual Blue-Gold Spring Football Scrimmage Saturday in South Bend, Ind. Rees' statistics were rather ordinary: 7-for-14 for 84 yards and one bad interception during his second series under center. He played better later in the game -- won by the defense 42-31 -- leading the offense on two scoring drives. With just over four months until Notre Dame's opening game, the conversation all summer will be dominated by who will lead the Irish when they play Navy in Dublin, Ireland in September. Rees' backups - Andrew Hendrix, Everett Golson and Gunner Kiel - all saw playing time Saturday. …

On Feb. 1, three Lake Forest High School football players announced their college decision with a cake and celebration at West Campus. Not overly demonstrative, but it was quite different from the approach of another Scouts athlete. All Michael Shipp did was sign a sheet of paper. In his kitchen. “I handed it to my mom so she could fax it,” said Shipp, a senior soccer player for Lake Forest. “Then I went to school." The low key tactic is in contrast with the high visibility university the 5-foot-11, 155-pound Shipp is committing to play for this fall. The Scouts’ captain in 2011 will be taking his talents to Notre Dame, a school of Knute Rockne, a perennial Top 20 soccer program and a national fan base as polarizing as any election …

THE SKINNY: Notre Dame fans are not the most optimistic of fan bases. Friday's 18-14 Champs Sports Bowl loss to Florida State gave them more fuel for what promises to be a pessimistic offseason. Lake Forest's Tommy Rees ended the game the way he started it: throwing an interception in the Seminole end zone. Rees' numbers on the day do not inspire confidence in South Bend for his junior season in 2012: 16-of-27 for 163 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions. The two picks were very costly as they stopped drives that could have led to points for the Irish. Rees record as a starter now sits at 12-4. GOOD TOMMY: With the Irish leading 7-0 at the half, Notre Dame took the opening kickoff and drove for a touchdown. Rees was the triggerman on…

Just 19 years old, Rees will start his 16th game Thursday as the quarterback of the Fighting Irish. It took the support of a community to help him get there.

In September 2007, Tommy Rees started his first high school football game for Lake Forest. It began a three-year run where the boyish, unassuming teenager transformed into a phenom: 5,529 career yards, 50 touchdown passes — both school records. Now, more than four years later, Rees is the triggerman for arguably the most scrutinized position in sports: starting quarterback of the Fighting Irish at Notre Dame. He won his first four games as an 18-year-old freshman in 2010, beating traditional rival USC and leading Notre Dame to a bowl win over Miami (Fla.). Despite being 12-3 as the starter, Rees' deficiencies are a never-ending debate in South Bend and by subway alums. Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Patch reporter Jon Kerr interviewed more than a …

It’s been almost an hour since the final whistle blew, the perfunctory sound in Notre Dame’s convincing 31-13 win over Michigan State on Sept. 17. Inside the school’s massive media room, a dozen reporters crowd around the podium, waiting impatiently -- we have deadlines after all! -- for the Irish starting quarterback to arrive. Emerging through a side door is the star of this reality show, wearing a white dry-fit long sleeve t-shirt and navy blue sweat pants. As he stands behind the podium, the camera lights turn on, microphones raised to below his chin. Like a politician at a fund-raiser, he stares straight ahead, only moving his head in the direction of the first question. It might be just another press conference for whomever is …

At the end of the 2009 season, he set a goal to play college football. This August, he will accomplish that goal. In between, Connor Cavalaris went on a journey he will never forget.
It was the call Connor Cavalaris had been waiting for his entire life. The 6-foot-1, 187-pound Lake Forest High School safety believed he had earned the call. His senior season, he reached heights on the football field never thought possible. All-Conference, All-Area, 50 tackles, four interceptions. He also blossomed into a leader, captain of a Scouts team that won its first playoff game in six seasons. He loved the game and wanted to take his talents to a college program. He knew the program he wanted to play for. They wanted him. All he was waiting for was the call. And in March, it came. Only he almost never knew it came. Journey It was Oct. 17, 2010. Lake Forest was 5-2, traveling to Vernon Hills to face the undefeated Cougars. It was…
