Profile of those in need is changing. Township, counselors help adjustment to a different world.
A 15 percent increase in demand at the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry this year is a clear indication the economy has not begun to improve for many local residents. Demand has grown between 12 and 15 percent annually since the economic downturn began in 2008 and has not shown signs of abating, according to West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison. Long a source of help for older residents who need a little assistance to remain in the community, the pantry has become a lifeline for families struggling with unemployment and mortgage payments, Morrison said. “We’ve always had our seniors but we’ve had a lot more families lately,” she said. Though any township resident whose income is below three times the national poverty …

The Holidays start today for some Deerfield, Lake Forest and Highland Park residents when they see what the secret Santas have done as part of West Deerfield Township’s annual Holiday Wish Program. People throughout the township adopt others whose holiday may not be so bountiful and make an effort to spruce it up. “People come in and want to know what they can do,” West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison said. “They tell us if they want to adopt a senior, an individual or a family. That’s all they know.” Morrison will let the donors know little more than a family consists of two parents, their clothing sizes and the ages of the children. The secret Santa takes it from there and brings the gifts to the Township office. …

Everything this outdated layer of government is a complete waste. It is time that we wake up and abolish it and save us the extra tax. What a total waste of resources. It is beyond time to completely do away with this layer of unneeded government.   more ›
