Highland Park senator comes back to work just under a year after suffering a stroke.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) returned to work today as he climbed 237 steps to the entrance of the Senate side of the United States Capitol just under a year after suffering a major stroke. Assisted by Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kirk walked slowly using a cane completing the ascent 10 minutes before the Vice President was scheduled to gavel the Senate into session for the 113th Congress. Biden was not worried about the timing. “You’ve got all day, pal,” the vice president said to Kirk at the bottom of the stairs. Senator meets with colleagues, deals with issues.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) gave the first update on his health in more than two months Friday thanking Dr. George Hornby and the team at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago for his improved mobility in that time. Kirk has been involved in a trial program at the institute aimed at speeding the recovery of stroke victims. In the last nine weeks, he has been involved in rigorous walking and other exercises. Senator releases video thanking citizens and showing his rehab effort.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) released a video Tuesday thanking the citizens of Illinois in his own voice for their support during his rehabilitation from a stroke suffered Jan. 21 and three resulting surgeries. Israeli leader talks to Illinois Senator about Iran.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) got a call today from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wishing Illinois’s junior senator a speedy recovery, according to a statement from Kirk’s office. The two spoke about Middle East issues and the urgent need for tougher sanctions to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, according to the statement. Senator making continued progress in rehabilitation, according to doctor.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park), who suffered a stroke Jan. 21, is meeting regularly with members of his staff, according to Dr. Richard Harvey, the physician who is treating the Senator at the Rehabilitation Institution of Chicago Center for Stroke Rehabilitation. Surgeons reattach the portion of his skull that had been removed after stroke.
Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Highland Park, continues to be listed in good condition after surgery Tuesday morning to reattach the portion of his skull that was removed after his stroke on Jan. 21, according to a statement from Dr. Richard Fessler, the neurosurgeon treating the senator at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “This is an important milestone in his recovery and a step toward the next phase, rehabilitation,” Dr. Fessler said. “He remains in good condition.” Doctors performed the first operation Jan. 22 when they removed a 4- by 8-inch piece of Kirk’s skull to relieve swelling in his brain, according to statements from the senator’s office. Sen. Mark Kirk’s (R-Highland Park) condition has been upgraded to fair from serious but stable today at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to Dr. Richard Fessler, the neurosurgeon who has been treating him. “Senator Kirk’s recovery is continuing,” Fessler said. “He is alert, talking and responding well to questions. He has been upgraded to fair condition and we are very pleased with his progress.” Since having the stroke Jan. 21, Kirk has undergone two operations to relieve swelling in his brain. To IMHO...would you have pushed for Franklin Roosevelt to resign? He smoked, drank martinis (sometimes it is said with his misstresses) and had servants spend hours dressing him everyday. His "service" to America included running for president even when he knewhe was deathly ill.
