Railroad, City Officials Seek to Improve Train Crossing Safety

Look at installing fencing, cracking down on trespassing.

Installing fencing along the railroad tracks from Woodland Road north past Lake Forest High School, along with stricter pedestrian enforcement around railroad crossings, are some of the suggestions coming from a group composed of Lake Forest officials and representatives from Union Pacific and Metra railroad companies. The group, which had not met for a year, reconvened April 26 to consider creating some proposals in conjunction with other initiatives launched in the wake of the deaths of three Lake Forest High School students hit by trains since January. VIDEO: All Aboard! A Front-Seat Look at Train Safety

Patch rides the rails with Operation Lifesaver Illinois for Safety Outreach Special 2011.

With a recent spike in Metra-related fatalities in the north suburbs, train officials are spearheading a new emphasis on rider safety. Through a partnership between Operation Lifesaver Illinois and Union Pacific, about 70 local leaders were invited to ride the train to Kenosha, Wisc. and back on Tuesday. With boxed lunches, Union Pacific tote bags and a thick packet of information, riders learned about the realities of railroad accidents.
