ReplyIn my opinion,
Stashes - after the old man left the original place, it went downhill and never recovered. That potchkey hot dog stand/bistro was a lousy concept w/food that wasn't worth the price...
Corner Bakery - nothing to write home about, and I always wondered how they made any money...
Cupcake places - one was good tasting, one was bad. The good one had lousy service, and cupcakes were a flash fad driven by the Food network shows, so that's no surprise they closed....
Benjamin and M we hashed out before in different threads...
Sax - too pricey, service was kinda lousy too...
Seems like customer service is a defining factor. We're Highland Parkers - we're very demanding, and we're ok with that. If you are too, you'll have a chance at survival. If not, then you're not going to last....

Yeah, I am...a little, sorry :-)
I've worked in restaurants, educational food service, etc, etc. so I totally get the restaurant business. It's not easy for anyone - customer, owner, employees, etc. I love to see good places with good value and good food succeed, but unfortunately there's been a bunch that haven't listened to their customers and have paid the price...

No need to be a cyber-bully AK....
Integrity - yep. I (along with many others) gave of my time for over 18 months to help design a BETTER plan. Not a perfect plan (none ever is), but a better plan nonetheless. I always said that the schools had needs and we ought to meet them. During the prior referendum, the District hadn't 'done the math', and the plan was not focusing on needs. This time around, they 'did the math', and the plan switched its focus. The way the new plan was made, will help to achieve long-term cost savings, so I supported the plan.
I can live with that and I stand by my decision. If that upsets you because I changed my position after being given new information ("the better plan"), then that's unfortunate - but that's your issue to deal with, not mine.

ReplyIt doesn't matter what the scenario is - whenever the question is: "Can the State [of Illinois] be trusted to ..." - the answer is always NO, they've proven this themselves time and again.

ReplyWhat a waste of money - get a dataplan for your tablet, and use that. Or tether your tablet to your phone and use your phone's dataplan... But paying for wi-fi on the train, when it's only going to be the same as a dataplan on a tablet or phone anyway? Feh...
And don't forget the fact that it'll probably be slower than your own dataplan because they'll have a bunch of commuters on it streaming everything for the ride...

Perhaps some do. I for one would love to see them succeed. Unfortunately however, I've seen the failures recur time and again because they fail to recognize the Voice of the Customer - so I believe it's quite pathetic that they don't believe they'll fail if they don't listen to what their customers are telling them.
If you offer whitefish and your customers want salmon and you refuse to offer it - something's wrong, and it's not with the customer...

@Deborah - I never said we ought to be complacent. I merely utilized the different kinds of fish as an example. What I did say is that for any restaurant to be successful, they have to be cognizant of several characteristics related to their business. One of the most important ones is giving the customer what they want.
Some chef's get bent out of shape when someone asks for something in a particular manner, and while that temper tantrum might work in New York or downtown Chicago, it's not going to work in Highland Park and eventually those businesses go out of business.
I also said the businesses need to have parking. I didn't comment on the proximity of the parking to the restaurant location. In some cases they have a lot (self park, valet, whatever), in other's it's on-street, and in yet other instances it's a nearby garage or lot. Regardless, a restaurant has to have parking available for customers, otherwise, they better be a delivery place :-)

mm, maybe it's your genetics, maybe not. Regardless, most people don't share your claimed experience, and that's why there's lots of anti-tobacco campaigns. I know people who smoke and are addicted - their health has suffered, and they still smoke. I knew a 2-pack a day smoker who had a heart attack from it and still said he'd rather
move the building brick by brick rather than stop...
Do I really care what someone over 21 does with their body? nope, so long as it's not
near me, not around me, and I don't have to breathe it Icould care less. But kids ought
not to be using tobacco because of the proven dangers, and because they're not old enough to make that life-or-death decision for themselves... it's up to their Parents to give them the straight facts on the dangers and to do what they can to keep them safe. The dangers are well-documented, and with few exceptins (such as yourself), it's addictive, costly, filthy, and deadly.
Personally, if I'm going to be addicted to something - I prefer chocolate...
