Career Resource Center Holds First Ever Fundraiser

For a nonprofit organization tucked away in a cultural compound in Lake Forest, Career Resource Center (CRC) makes a significant impact. Funded by private donations and grants, it assists and mentors more than 1,000 people in their quest to find jobs each year. Its candidate success rate hovers around 80 percent.  A first-ever organizational fundraiser, featuring light appetizers, desserts and wine tasting, took place recently at the Art Center - Highland Park where 90 attended. The evening netted CRC more than $6,000.

Sunset Foods sponsored the event, while Carol’s cookies and Maria’s Italian Bakery provided desserts.  Local musician Tom Meyer provided musical entertainment for the evening’s fare.

“This [event] is being held to help Career Resource Center forward its mission to empower those who are under- and unemployed,” said executive director Jan Leahy. “We also rely on more than 125 dedicated volunteers to guide and support people through the job search process.”

The services and resources it provides and the appreciation it generates shows when former clients talk about its impact on their lives.

Wendy Richter from Gurnee, who began a new position in July, said, “In 2012, I was a stay-at-home mom returning to work and heard about [CRC]. They helped me build my confidence and I learned how to write my resume for today’s market. They taught me how to market myself after years at home. I’ve gotten to talk to a lot of people and advisors, accessing a wealth of knowledge that never would have been available if I had to pay market rates for it.”

“They had great seminars and were very supportive,” said Linda Heeter from Gurnee. “CRC is wonderful and encouraging,” she said.

“This is a wonderful nonprofit that has served a lot of men and women,” said Jane Hadler, a volunteer from Lake Forest. “I hope it will always be there!”

Former member Kirstin Caspersen from Lake Bluff, who now volunteers at CRC, said, “It is a great group and a nice atmosphere. I share its passion and its benefits.

Leahy added, “Work is really important for everyone! We impact families, extended families and the community.”
