Family Launches Fundraiser for Lake Forest Native Shot at Airport

Donations will go toward Brian Ludmer's medical expenses as he recovers from being shot at LAX on Nov. 1.

The Lake Forest native who was shot last week at Los Angeles International Airport is receiving an outpouring of support as his family works to raise money for his medical bills.

Brian Ludmer's siblings, Matt, Nick, Graham, and Sarah, launched an online fundraiser this week for Brian, who remains in the hospital. As of Wednesday, more than $27,000 had been donated toward the family's $100,000 goal. The money will go directly to Ludmer for his medical expenses, according to the youcaring.com site. Ludmer will require multiple surgeries and months of physical therapy, according to the family's message on the site.

The fundraiser will run for two months. If more money is contributed than he needs, it will be donated to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, his siblings said.

The donation site includes a note from Brian Ludmer, who wrote:

I am overwhelmed by all your thoughts and prayers after yesterday's incident. I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm going to be o.k. Without going into too much detail, I was shot once in the back of my right calf. The bullet then exited my right shin and grazed my left leg. The tibia and fibula in my right leg were both completely shattered producing multiple compound fractures. I crawled to safety, applied a tourniquet, and was later found by the police who pulled me out of the building despite great risk to themselves as the shooter was still active at the time.

Ludmer also wrote that he had surgery the same day he was shot, and that he'll need at least two more operations and a metal rod put in his leg. He had a second surgery Monday, his siblings reported on the fundraising site. They posted a photo of their brother using a walker in the hospital Tuesday.
